To be honest it does not really surprise me, there some parts of British 'society' who still have delusions of superiority.


I don't think the MP in question is necessarily stupid, tasteless perhaps and unlikely to have a long political career - unfortunately a lot of her constituents probably harbour the same prejudices. With the typical level of stupidity shown at times, she probably resides in a 'safe seat' with the populace blindly voting for her party regardless of how limp a candidate the BNP elects to field.

MP (Members of Parliament) are elected members of the Parliament and are in the House of Commons.

The UK uses a bi-cameral system (which the US inherited) with an elected House of Commons and an upper house called the House of Lords (which consist of hereditary and appointed peers). Peers include the various Lords and Earls - essentially they are aristocratic and inherited titles with the balance filled with those appointed during their own lifetime to peerage (ie Lord or Earl). I'm not even going to enter into the debate about the dubious method of appointment as I am a republican.

The House of Lords is roughly equivalent to the US Senate and the House of Commons, the equivalent to Congress.

As with the US Congress, MPs in the House of Commons are appointed under a FPP (First Past the Post) system and the Head of State (UK - Queen) will then request the party with the most representatives to try and form a government.

In any case, if the seat is 'safe' then they have as much chance as a snowball in Hades of getting her out - but better than under MMP

she's one of the types that come from the countryside where they don't know much about anything. bi-cameral system isn't quite what the US uses entirely its based on it but they have the supreme court.
Also the house of lords aren't elected they are chosen and are only replaced if they either quit or die. Not like Senate. They were also thinking of getting rid of the house or lords at one point. They are probably still arguing about that

The US Senate is equal to the UK House of Lords
The US House of Representatives is equal to the House of Commons.

Parliament is a collective name for the 2 houses of the UK legislature
