sohc conversion to dohc vtec

i have a d17a1 sohc and i'm interested in converting it to a b16 dohc vtec... what is the best way to go about that and what are the minimum number components i would have to replace so i can avoid doing a whole engine swap??

Unfortunately your only option is to swap. A SOHC motor can't be converted into a DOHC motor. Well it can be theoretically, but it would cost FAR more than it's worth (thousands of dollars you'd be talking). As for your particular Civic with it being a 7th gen version ('01 model) I'm not sure off hand how easy a B16 swap would be since the engine mount points are almost certainly different than that of earlier Civics that the B16 will drop into perfectly. I'm also unsure if a K20 motor will drop in as easily, but it may work better...

Re: sohc conversion to dohc vtec

K20A2 = RSX engine
K20A3 = Si engine i'm pretty sure that's right...

Anyways, check into the motor. I agree it's definitely more likely for the swap to possible as opposed to a b-series motor. Just try to find a wrecked RSX...

Re: sohc conversion to dohc vtec

B series motor...Dont do it on a 7th gen civic.
K20 motor...Is more of a swap for a 7th gen civic. My cousin told me (am not sure though, still have to research "more") that the K20 fits perfectly on the 7th gen civics. They have the same mounts as the RSX. Honda/Acura where you can get K20's are as follows:

Acura RSX 160 hp
Acura RSX-S 200hp
Honda Civic Si 160 hp
(then theres the type-R K20 at 220 hp, not sure what car but you have to import it from Japan.)

the ITR engine in Japan is a K24(2.4 liter), i believe. Good luck on importing one of those tho...

Re: sohc conversion to dohc vtec

my local shop in my area can import a k24 but for that price you can get 2 RSX-S engines..but like i said before.. i have an RSX(-S) (if you wanna be engine specific) and it was a simple drop and drive but had to order the mounts
