1996 Taurus stalling and Transmission jerks
I have a 1996 Taurus that had the engine replaced in 1/2003. I have 82,000 miles on it. I have two problems: 1. The car stalls when it is cold driving down the road or when I accelerate. 2. The transmission changes hard when you accelerate. It sounds like it's going to fall out when it jerks into gear. It has been taken in several times and no one can help me. Nothing shows up on the computer when they check it out. Once the car warms up it idles find. The tranny problem is always there. New plugs and wiring done last year with engine replacement. Tranny fluid and filter changed in the last 6 months. I added another half qt. of fluid to transmission and still jerks into gear. Any suggestions?

Re: 1996 Taurus stalling and Transmission jerks
Fuel curve is too lean for the cold condition. check the coolant temp and air temp sensor. Line pressure is too high on the tranny. You will have to take it to a trans shop to take care of that, unless the car is idling way too high. You can also pull the wires off of the coolant temp sensor and send the car into full rich condition and see if it runs better too.

Re: 1996 Taurus stalling and Transmission jerks
I too was experiencing harsh shift into first gear and had a complete tune-up done. When I got my car back, it still was shifting harshly. Took it back and the mechanic told me it was a transmission problem. He replaced a electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid. It seemed to corrected the trouble.
