Just found this Forum and glad I can get some advice!
Just got a new mod for the engine offf ebay. One of those speedchips to improve performance. Anybody use them or know how well they work? |

Re: New engine mod
Jet Performance Chips has an ECU upgrade available. I am thinking about doing this. Also, check with MSD Ignitions, they have upgraded ignition components that will give you a lot more spark per coil. So this results in an improvement in combustion of gas, resulting in more power. I am trying to find out if MSD will increase gas mileage as well.

I bid on one of those $3 chips, or a resistor, that is suppose to increase hp by +20 and easy to install. Said to not harm anything. Anybody know of these??

Re: New engine mod
FYI: if you still have a warranty on you truck and something happens to it due to a new chip/resistor kiss your warranty bye bye.
the resistor one does something with the Mass air flow sensor. keep in mind more air in = less MPG If you your looking for real HP why not install a Super Charger? MSD doesn't have anything for our trucks. I don't know how your're going to get a better spark then having the 1 coil per plug which is directly over each plug. Also, if you install the Jet Chip, get ready to open up your pocket book too. Because you will need to start to use Super Unleaded gas to stop the engine from knocking. I know of a few people who have installed the Jet Chip and they noted to me the saw ZERO difference in the seat of the pants dyno. If you want cheap and easy upgrades, try a free flow fliter and muffler upgrade. There are headers avaible but again the few folks that have tried them noted zero difference and noted that the OEM ones looked to be high flowing already. -Ryan

Re: Re: New engine mod
MSD does have items available. This is what MSD suggest for my 2001 Rodeo 3.2L:
Your truck has 6 individual coils so the installation is a little more involved then normal. The ignition box that you can use is the DIS 4 part number 6215 and one 6211 DIS 2). You will also need three of the 8912 adapters. If you are looking for just an increase in spark energy then use the Stacker 8 part number 7020 and the filter part number 8830. This will give you the boost of the ignition but does not have any of the limiting functions or timing functions. It does not have the output of the DIS boxes but is much better then stock. These will be available through one of our dealers listed on our web page. Thanks, MSD tech Now, I don't know if buying these MSD items will benefit much or not. |

I agree with the scepticism on the resistor chip. Seller says it doesn't violate any warranty, but you never know until it's too late.
I do want to change out the stock air filter. Looks like an easy enough upgrade. I know Calmini has a set-up, but I also see other companies on ebay for half the price. Any suggestions on a good brand and their ease of installation? Just found out about possibility of a supercharger. Who does it? Any info? All in all, there just doesn't seem to be much more to do to get at this 3.2l engine. |

Re: New engine mod
The problem with cone filters is that they suck in dirty hot engine air. Your best bet, it to install a K+N drop in panel filter (and you can mod your your air box by removing the elbow that goes into the fender. Keep inmind that more air in means more gas too. Some Isuzu owners report a decrease and some an increase in MPG.
As for the SC, check out the FAQ for more info and links. -Ryan

Re: New engine mod
If you build a heat sheild out of metal or polycarbonate to seal off the cone filter from the engine bay, they work alot better. Just seal them off so they suck fresh air from the stock area instead of hot engine air.

Re: New engine mod
I did some digging on filters in Isuzu and added it to my FAQ section:
I would like to add a high flow air filter, which one? You have a couple of options. You can remove your air box and add a calimini or K&N cone air filter: http://www.pureisuzu.com/hi-flow_air_filter1.htm http://www.geocities.com/treading_lightly/knfilter.html The problem with the the cone is that they will suck lots of hot dirty air from the engine bay. Many have noted that they have seen a decrease in MPG (more air in = more gas) Cone airfilter definitely makes the engine breathe better but more air in will mean more fuel to some degree but not to the extent that it will cause ANY problem. The computer and O2 sensors take care of adjusting the mix. There is a little bit of a torque loss with the cone filter due to the extra hot air ingested but a simple airbox ‘wall’ can be created to negate that. If you do change your filter (to high flow or OEM) make sure you reset the ECU, by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. The ECU will then relearn the new components that were added to give you the best MPG. there are 3 bolts to remove.2 inside the box and one on the outside (between the engine and the filter box).the one on the outside has a nut to remove and a stud to remove.once you remove the bolts, the lower half of the filter box will come out.look on the inside of the elbow and remove the s shaped thing by pushing down on it.now you can remove the elbow.i had to use a screw driver to pry it out. More Notes on hot air: http://club.vmag.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/002137.html The outside air temp was 97, temp gauge only goes up to 160 Location filter box- 10mph: 155 30mph: 112 60mph: 107 Location intake man- 10mph: 160+ 30mph: 160+ 60mph: 150 Still want to use an unshielded cone filter? If you do you should make your own heat shield like this: OR You can install a drop in panel filter: Drop in K&N helps a bit but again the biggest restriction is the elbow through the fender - remove that before you invest in a drop in (pull the stock airbox and you will see the black plastic elbow). If you take the air box off to work on the elbow you will see that the elbow will actually come off without cutting! It takes a little shimying to get the sucker off, but it WILL come off without any cutting. http://club.vmag.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/000623.html Here's what I did Dave Chang: I cut open the air passage on the stock airbox and used a propane torch to seal the cut seams. Then I used a 3" PVC attached to a rubber coupling joint inserted into the hole in the fender to force the airbox to breathe air outside the engine bay. Running the K&N panel filter for stock airbox. custom intake tube: http://hometown.aol.com/donsteph29/page1.html
