earthing....some new tuners mod in japan

hi guys, im kinda skeptical about this, but its worth a try...

its becoming extremely popular amoung tuners in japan..earthing (ground) the top headmount screws on the motor to the - (minus) on the battery. you guys hear about this? im hearing that most people who have done this no brainer no $ mod that they have felt increases in mid-throttle around the lower to mid rpm range. its not for wot condition increase.

again, im pretty skeptical about it myself, but worth a try. gonna get me some 8-10awg wires over the weekend and give it a shot.

just thinking, would it not effect the ecu in any way? main reason being that theres alsorts of sensors around the engine, will it not effect the readings that they produce?

one other thing? the engine is normally earthed anyway, isnt it?

Post up some pics when youve done it, so we get the location of the top mount. Thanks

You are quite correct on all counts. The engine is grounded, or earthed, in at least 3 places, although none are direct to the battery negative terminal.

The ECU is very sensitive to changes in some sensors. Most particularly, the early SR20DE models were quite sensitive to the ground of the MAF. So sensitive that less than 10mv (yes, that's milivolts) can materially affect idle, throttle response, and even hp.

The only possible thing I could see it doing is maybe providing a more powerful spark. But, the SR20 ignition system is so stout, I have huge doubts even this would be affected.

I'm almost 100% sure that the engine in my car is earthed directly to the battery... from the factory, of course

Doggonit, you're right. I forgot. There is a ground/earth strap that goes from the negative terminal to the chassis, to the thermostat housing. Thanks. You're exactly right.

ok this is very weird sounds bogus to me . but i was thinking maybe the ground at the thermostat hoseing isnt enough? maybe a ground wire at each headbolt would provide a shorter path to ground thus less resistance and beatter spark due to a beatter ground ?plus alumium doesnt conduct as well as copper so the less it has to travel thru the head maybe the beatter ? at any rate i dont see anyone feeling the diffrence, the hp gain would be low .im just gonna keep saveing up for that f-max kit ....

I personally think a little Eye of Newt would do just as much for performance.

i dont know dudes, I tried it with a 8awg I had... havent driven it yet, but I did compare with and without it on idle. basically it seems like the motor is well grounded already. might be a honda thing...not sure. I used shortest path to the ground. if I feel anything tomorrow during my commute, will let you know.

here's the url if you can read it. this is one of many.
