1996 Cav. AC not working

Thinking of buying a 96 4 door Cav but the AC does not work.

Is this just a freion thing you think?

If so, do the 96 cavs have the old AC system or the new system?

If it is the old, how expensive would it be to convert it or whatever?

Thanks.

Does yer compressor kick on when you turn it on, and does the fan work?
If so, then it likely is a freon thing, because mine does that, the compressor and fan come on but the air is not cold. As to the new/old freon, I'm not sure, mine is a '90, so it probably has the old freon. I've heard that's expensive to fix, but I don't personally know. That's my , does anybody else know anything more, likely you do but as far as I can see, that could be yer problem.

Re: 1996 Cav. AC not working

I have a "96" cav and a friend of mine the same. Both had the seals in the compressor go out. Cant get the parts, Have to get a new one. Was quoted right at $200 for the compressor at Pep Boys and another local shop. Of course I didnt add labor cost due I am a a/c and heat man that knows how to replace. Forgot to state that it uses R-134a. No hidden cost's in that. I buy my R134a at "Sams" Cost me $50 for a 30lb's

Any air conditioning problem is expensive to fix, unless you know someone in the biz...

Not really that hard of work. Just gotta find someone with the right tools to help ya. Home a/c work is one of the easiest jobs I've ever had and the money is silly. Everyone should be able to repair these things

Re: 1996 Cav. AC not working

I too would like resources on compressor replacement
Here's my other post:

I've got a Chiltons Manual but it was awful nice of them to exclude the section on A/C. I bought my '95 cavi used and rebuilt. My compressor assembly was removed which I didn't mind until now because it doesn't suck engine power. but now its getting hot in MD and I'm originally from Maine so I'm not really a hot weather kinda guy. However, being from Maine I have never really worked on A/C so any advice would be helpful

does anyone have an exploded diagragm for a 2.2L compressor? Also, if I buy a Compressor/clutch will I still need a coil, a pulley, valves etc? (yes, I already know I need a new belt)? Also, I'm not sure how long the rest of the system has been 86 (I'm guessing about a year) so what kind of problems should I expect other than replacing the compressor? Is there an easy way to check for leaks before I dump freon into the system?

Mostly it just sucks that I have no component list or diagram so I'm not sure how many parts were removed along with the compressor.

Re: 1996 Cav. AC not working

Best advice is , if you are not trained and have all the coreect tools don't try. There is one way of doing the job and then there is a correct way. There is a difference. And yes that is a R134A systems. All cars 95 up are R134A. Some started in 94 but all had to come aboard in 95.
