Installing Aftermarket CD/MP3 Player in 2002 Tahoe - I'm Having Problems

Hey everyone! I'm new to this site and was hoping to find out some information from anyone that can help. I have a 2002 Tahoe LT and am trying to install a JVC CD/MP3 player in it. I first tried to do so by buying a generic wiring harness that would connect to the factory harness. Then I connected the CD Players wiring harness to the generic one and finished the install. It powered up and played everything fine but the sound was either intermittent or would not be heard at all. I checked all the wires and they were correct. I also returned the CD player for a new one and it does the same thing. I am tending to believe there is something interfering with the OnStar system.

Does anyone have an idea or clue how to get this to work? I really want to put a new CD/MP3 player in but can figure out what the heck to do. I really don't care if the OnStar works afterwards because I don't use it - Too expensive. Any help is appreciated.

The player I bought is this one: http://www.jvc.com/product.jsp?model...ve=true&page=1

Thanks,
Bill

Re: Installing Aftermarket CD/MP3 Player in 2002 Tahoe - I'm Having Problems

It's not the CD/MP3 player because I am having the same probelm with my 01 tahoe and a Alpine MP3/CD player... Mine either works when you start the car or it doesn't it will not turn off or on after the car has started. If I get in and it does not work I have to turn off the car, remove the key, open the door and then start the car to get it to come back on, and even that doesn't always work. Occasionally after i turn off the car and remove the key the radio will continue to play (as it should until the door is opened) but will shut off when i go to close the sunroof..?? I really need to find out what the problem is because this is driving me crazy!

I believe that has to do with the circuitry of the of the gm radios, easy way to overcome this is to wire yourself a seperate wire to feed the "turn on" to the radio to bypass the delayed exit circuit

Re: Installing Aftermarket CD/MP3 Player in 2002 Tahoe - I'm Having Problems

I had a similar discussion with a guy that had the same problem and this is what I told him is probably the problem. If I had to guess, the factory radio does not have a built in amp. I think there is an external amp and crossover outside the radio that powers up the four door speakers as well as diverting the bass to the back and boosting it as well. If you put an aftermarket radio into this setup, regardless of wiring harness, you are mismatching signals and opening up a whole new can of worms. Furthermore, the OnStar is like an auxillary that is also plugged into the amp. That can probably be fixed easier than the other problem. If all of this is the case, then in order for you to use an aftermarket set up, you are either going to have to bypass the external amp in the Tahoe(which could be a major mess) and use the JVC amp to power the door speakers or you can attempt to have a converter put on your speaker output terminals coming from the JVC BEFORE you put your wiring harness on. The signal will then be compliant with the Tahoe amp's inputs. I strongly suggest you take this situation to a reputable workshop. And I am not talking about Best Buy or Circuit City either. Let me know how it turns out.
