I have a 95 grand cherokee limited with all wheel drive and the front wheels aren't moving but the back ones do. I also have a problem with the 4wd switch. When i shift it into 4lo the VIC says i need to service 4wd switch. Could this be the reason my front tires aren't moving?

Re: Four Wheel drive not working
the front wheels should turn all the time the rear ones do if they dont then it says something is wrong with the transfer case, ie. the drive chain when bad or something else. If its a Quadra Trac or Full Time 4X4 then the front tires should pull the same as the back, time to check out the transfer case. Good luck

I just went out next to a window to see if the front was spinning on the snow. It looked like the front wheels were spinning. But yesterday i got it stuck on purpose to see if it was working and it didn't. Why does it look like its spinning? Is that caused by the viscous coupling?

Re: Four Wheel drive not working
It may be spinning but unless the traction on all the tires is equal then the one with the least traction will spin. On units that have a locking feature like the Slect-a-trac then the transfer case will lock in and devide the traction between front and rear tires. Full-Time 4X4 usually only lock in in low range and then only one wheel on front and one on the rear will spin, unless it is equipped with a posi trac unit in the front or rear differentals. As far as I know only the Quadra Drive units and Slect-A-Trac's are setup in this fashion. Something to checkout. Good luck

Re: Four Wheel drive not working
quick review. Quadra-Trac, power split (30%-70%) rear wheel have more power then front wheels. when the VC senses that the rear wheel is slipping it lock up and applys equal power to all wheel, like a locker. ur VC is not bad, if it was BAD the wheel would always be locked that is the most common problem with the Quadra-Trac(NP249) transfer case. I think ur problem might be the 4WD Switch. have it checked.

Re: Four Wheel drive not working
Description of a VC. it is somewhat like a clutch type device. it has a center spline which goes straight to the Rear driveshaft, and an outer spline which is connected to a chain which goes over to the front driveshaft. well in between these splines is a puddy type fluid, which when speeds on the inner and outter splines changes dramatically (rear wheels spinning faster then front- slipping detected), the fluid hardens and causes a bond for the inner and outter spline making them spin at the same speed (locking them together).
