Chevy Timing Marks

Does anyone know where I could find an illustration of all the timing mark indexes chevy has ? I have a 88 Chevrolet V-30 (87 Body style K30 Cab and chassis) duely truck with a TBI 350, vin code "K" engine which is having a really hard time getting thru our new emissions test. The timing mark index is all rusted and I cant read the degrees on it. I can not find anything in the books that look like it. This truck is so wierd. Its like its a normal truck engine in a heavy duty truck and every time I go for parts they guys tell me "You dont have that in your truck" but I really do.

Anyone in here really good with '88 GM TBI emissions ? I do have some questions about stuff I cant find in the books/web ie: why does my IAC go way up, 100+, when I am in cruse mode (on the highway at 65mph). Shouoldent it be 0 off idle? Think my injectors are leaking?

so much to learn and so little time.

Thanks in advance for your help

Pam

Re: Chevy Timing Marks

The large notch is 0 (tdc) Be sure to disconnect the timing connector wire before you try to set timing. If the emissions label is still under the hood it will give you timing instructions. Taking a piece of sandpaper to the timing indicator will make it much clearer. I think the timing connector on your truck is under the master cyl.,brown and black wire,2 pin weatherpack connector. It loops out of the wiring harness. About the IAC- the IAC is held open at all speeds-it stays open in case you have to hit the brakes hard, this avoids engine stall. Since you know where your IAC is,I assume you have a scan tool. Is your engine temp. in the 190 range? I don't know the emission specs in your area,so far we have avoided them where I live, but the more details the better.

Thanks for your help Bronco. I kind of assumed that the big notch was was TDC but wanted to make sure. I tried to get the rust off with a moto tool with a wire brush but that just polished the rust .

Re: Chevy Timing Marks

yeah just have a buddy keep turning it side to side while you crank it until its good enough that the motor kicks and starts up. then get out your timing light and set it from there. make sure you unplug the vaccuum advance hose at the advance mechanism (not at the carb) and put a screw in the now-open vaccuum hose so that it is set up correctly
