89 GP 3.1 timing mark for replacing timing chain
Before I replace the timing chain which is broken, I'd like to get the engine to #1 TDC before removing everything. However, I don't see any kind of mark on the front cover to line up the crankshaft pulley. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 89 GP 3.1 timing mark for replacing timing chain
According to my '89 Grand Prix service manual, the marks are not on the cover but on the sprocket themselves.

Re: 89 GP 3.1 timing mark for replacing timing chain
Thanks. After I took the cover off, i found a chunk of it missing with parts of it falling into the oil pan. The car is not worth fixing anymore. I do have a great set of 205/65/15 on it. Any takers? I'm just going to part it out.

It depends on the price, should list it in the classifieds if want you want to sell.

Re: 89 GP 3.1 timing mark for replacing timing chain
Why not just throw a new chain, sprockets, and tensioner on there?
I'm sure you'll be able to get it going.

She's a little rough. Best thing about it the moonroof and tires. Typical Chicago rust, minor dents...
