Starter makes spinning down noise after start

I have a 94 Dodge Intrepid , 3.3L. Just replaced the starter, old one had a bad solenoid. After the car starts, I get a semi-loud spinning down noise from the starter. Lasts for about 3 seconds right after kicking over.The old starter was using a metal shim between the engine and the starter. Haynes says to use the shim on the new starter. Is my starter working properly? Should I remove the shim?? Or will this go away in time??Any help would be much appreciated!!!!
