97 Ranger "howling" air flow noise after starting

I have a 97 Ranger. At certain times after starting, I get a low pitched howling noise. If I squeeze the plastic intake hose from the air filter to the intake, the noise changes. There is some sort of control valve on the engine side of the air filter that I believe is causing this strange noise. Any idea what this part is and whether it can be cleaned? or if I replace, any idea what the cost is? Thanks.

you prob. have a idle speed control valve that has a little wear and is resonating. easy fix.

My 95 Ranger makes the same sound currently. I'm wondering if it might be the air filter? My truck doesn't start sometimes so I'm wondering if this might be the cause of this? Have you changed your air filter lately??

I don't think that it is air filter related. The filter is fairly new...I inspected it...looked pretty clean....additionally, I disconnected it from the intake path while the truck was making the noise and the noise did not change until I limited the flow (by squeezing of the flexible hose).

It is most likely the Idle Air Control Valve. I had the same problem and that was it. Apparently it is a common problem.
