Unhappy Passat 1994 19TDi, Fuel Gauge,Rev counter,Glow plug light all not working?

I have just bought the car and need advice on how to fix this Dashboard problem. Is their one component that controls all these instruments that could have failed. I will check the fuses first!
Also how does the dashboard come apart? Where are all the hidden screws and does the airbag wheel have to come off first?
Will the speedo cable break as I pull the instruments? I've learnt the hard way before!
Cheers for any help?

The steering wheel/airbag don't have to come off. Geting the cluster out is pertty straightforward, just remove the trim covers. The problem is with the 28 pin connector. I have been unable to repair this connector on several vehicles, but placing the right amount of torque on it fixes the problem. I've seen screws inserted between the housing & connector to accomplish this. Good luck.
