we've taken to calling them hot air, since they take in hot air and there is nothing "ram air" about them.

You want Ram Air check out the GrandAm RamAir3400's or TransAm RamAir's. That is ram air, not some dinky straw under the hood of your favorite Honda.

Then why in gods name would you say its a 5hp gain? Intakes, especially "hot air" wont give you anything other then a nice engine sound.... that is unless you sitting at redline... thats the only way you might see a few horsepower.

CAI, both the normal and front mount will both give you more power, but again unless you are driving your car like a mad man you arent even going to be able to tell. I dont know why people think when modding a car that you gotta have I/H/E ~ I can think of a much better way to spend $1500 (for a decent setup) that would give you MUCH more power ~ put it towards a turbo or supercharger depending on your "flavor" likes... you will be MUCH more happier when you are talking 50-60hp+ gains over 5-6 WHEEL hp from a few bolt ons that cost about half of what a turbo would drop you...

which is why I said 5hp. If he is sitting at a dyno run, he'll see about 5 flywheel from it which translates to about 3 to the wheels. I'm saying that cuz an AEM CAI puts 12hp to the flywheel (8 to the wheels) on a B16, so you gotta give that little straw some credit.

hot air intakes DO lose power with a prolonged drive 2+hrs where the engine bay does really heat up. However, since dyno runs are how its tested, with the hood up and the cold air all around it, it'll get a slight gain. That is opposed to CAI, which takes in cold air at all times and will always give you that 12hp flywheel, no matter how far the drive.

I know it's not the same car, but on an unmodded NX2000, we saw a surprising 6 hp @ the wheels gain! That's with a short stack cone filter.

I suspect the gains were mostly from the machined intake horn. Just my two cents, to show that perhaps "hot air" intakes aren't completely useless...

The NX2000 has the SR20DE engine, 2 litres, DOHC. Stock, it's 140 hp, 132 ft-lbs of torque.

Mine, with all my trinkets is around 165 bhp, according to the dyno.

Not as tasty as the SR20DET, but still fun nevertheless

I can see 6hp out of a 2.0, remember we're only talking about a 1.6L single cammer.

that was an open hood dyno correct?

With a closed hood, after time, the air that's being taken in will get hot and give you lower gains than on the open hood dyno, but still your gains sound great. Pretty restrictive stock motor eh?

True on all counts, larger engine, and hood open.

And I think it speaks more to the fact that the stock intake is poorly designed.

Same goes for the SE-R Spec V - crap stock intake = 9 hp at the wheels from a CAI!
