Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
I'm curious if anyone here tried to spread modelling among their friends. There are a few people around here that I know are friends.... was it friends first then modelling, spread from one to another? Or was it modelling first, and that's what made friends?
None of my friends have any desire to build models, though in the past I have had friends who built armor or aircraft, and have some now that are into wargaming. My girlfriend once tried to take an active interest, and suggesded that she join me one week in a build. So we went to my LHS where said she could have whatever she wanted. She bought a Gundam model, and with my guidance she built it. When done, she said, "Modelling is great! For you." and though she tolerates me spending time with plastic instead of her and enjoys my finished projects, she has never again attempted to weild an X-acto knife or paint brush. Who here has tried the same? Any luck? I am curious.

None of my friends are very interested in modeling. They are nice enough to offer some kind words when I show them a freshly finished car. But to most of them, they are just toys I threw together in an afternoon. When in reality I take a month or 2 on each.
I have however made some friends with modelers because of modeling, and more importantly through AF. I have to thank Zoom-Zoom for the invite to ACME. A local modeling club. I've had the oportunity in the past few months to meet some of the awesome modelers on this board. Veyron, Zoom-Zoom, P9o1r1she, and some others. I've been to my first model car show, and was humbled by the awesome talent that showed up. And although I've been modeling for 20 years or so on and off, I'm fairly new to techniques like polishing, and scratchbuilding, etc.. The people I've met have been an invaluable resource of information to me. With tips and technique help. But more recently, instead of recruiting friends to keep car modeling alive, I've included my 2 sons. They are 10 and 8. They are building snap togethers, and the father-son time is cool. I'd rather have them rotting their brains with paint/glue fumes, than on PS2 or their gameboys At least they'll have something to show for their lost brain cells, a pretty completed car. The only problem is they are now eyeballing all of my unstarted kits lurking in the garage.

none of my friends are into modeling like I am. One of my friends likes to take dicasts and slam'em with his dremel though
He's pretty much the only one who's ever shown any interest in my builds. Everyone else just says, "you still play with toys?"

the following is my own point of view, which subject to different woman......
my women (mom and gf) do not like modelling they said "what is the fun in it"? they only concern and always bug me how much space our model kits consumed But they would not say how many closet their fashion and clothes consumed girls don't have the patience in modelling, but they do have patience in shopping in a mall for whole day, or having tea whole afternoon at a cafe, or how much enjoying while eating desert which men do not like much Modelling is a very healthy hobby, not like gamble/horse racing which is very common in Asia. People got addict in those things. just my one cent, that only applies to me. You can hold other point of view.

I've tried, but no takers. Several are die-cast collectors (Muscle Machines, Import Tuners, etc), but no builders. A few tried, but never made it very far. My brother used to build Gundam models all the time in college, but his work takes too much of his time for him to get back into modeling.
Others give me the "toy" or "why bother" or "buy a built one" response, at which point I change the subject rather than wasting my time explaining it to someone who will never get it. |

Re: Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
Most of my friends just think I'm silly when I'm sitting in study hall looking at model cars or something. I have a couple friends who are into modeling and my brother used to be real hardcore into them when he was younger and last night decided to go out and buy a new kit because I was showing him my truck I just painted.

Re: Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
Me and a friend of mine are both huge WRC fanatics, so we both bought a Heller WRC medel kit. I got a subaru and he got himself a Focus. From that time we are both into modelling.

Re: Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
Most people i know would love to do it but seem scared to take it up for fear of making mistakes etc and end up trying to get me to build one for them.

Modeling is a family hobby in my househould (right down to my 13 year old sister's Fujimi Ferrari 348tb), though some of us are more into certain aspects than others.
My little brother Ian likes to do radical engine mods (right now he's working on twin turboing a Viper V10 ). My other younger brother Jason loves customs and lead sleds, any chance to bust out the Flexi-Files and putty. Dad's always been big on chassis work and accurizing poor kits (mostly because he's always just worked with what was available. Ideas like "resin" and "photoetch" are still "cheating" to him). Me, I'm all about bucking trends and trying different things. I'd hate to have the same model built as someone else.Anyways, what I'm trying to say is when I try to introduce friends to modeling I always try to show them just how much there is going on in the hobby and that there's plenty of room for personal interpretation. Also, I try not to put so much emphasis on "finishing" a model. The way I've always seen it, the building is the fun part. Once you've finished a model, you don't get to build it anymore, so you can either take my route and have 100-odd kits crammed into your basement, or take your time and savor the build.

Re: Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
For me, it's easy, all my friends are in my modeling club. So ....
I had chance when I first met them. They were absolutely not into modeling but when they discovered what I was doing they were automaticaly excited. I talked them about my club, they came once, twice, ... and then felt in love with carmodeling. Now they are some of the best modelers of my club. |

Re: Anyone try to talk their friends into models?
My friends are fascinated at the fact that I build them still but they show no real interest in trying it. I just do it for me.
