Aoshima Veilside RX-7; Combat II

Hi everybody.

Before I move on to my subject, let me introduce myself. (for the slightly lighter readers who don't really give half a crap about me, skip to the next paragraph) I wouldn't call myself an eperienced modeler. I've only put together one other model; the 1970 mustang boss by Revell. I am, however, pretty influential on the X-concepts modifiers line, and just about everyone knows me or my work on their message boards, so I'm no stranger to glue, paint fuems, and razor blade cuts.

I am a stranger to the japanese language though, which brings me to the point of my post- the rx-7 model I bought today. I was kinda disapointed at the lack of engine (which was my most anticipated part), but I was more concerned with the instructions which were decidedly... japanese, lol.

Well, after trying my best to stare at the instructions until it made sense ( ) I figured I could put this thing together fairly easily. My problem are the parts that can not be fully explained by pictures or common sense, and I was hoping that some one who has put this model together, or some one who's just plain smarter than me can help me.

On the parts page, there are a few parts that are shaded. (21, 22, 54, 55, and so on) I decided they were alternate parts, and then got even more confused. Did I find a stock lip in a package that contains no stock bumper? I figured out the stock wing. What are those clear thingies? Where do I find the tube shaped peices of the brakes?

Also, how am I going to do the tail lights? Do I tape the thing up and paint the background of the tail lights black, then paint the circles different colors? Oh- and how low is this thing? should I modify it to be lower? Does anyone have a picture of a finished one?

Thanks for reading this, and please help me work through my thickness.

Hey, first off welcome.

Second and last...do a search. I'm saying this now before any of the others guys get 'loco' =P

As for the pictures of complete rx-7's

I've seen many pics in the build-up section when I've searched for that car (i've got one in the box waiting for me to build). So just go to the "completed-in progress" sub-forum and search veilside aoshima rx-7 or a combo of those terms and you'll be ok.

I can't help you part numbers however, but once you search you'll find out who's made what and you can just pm the one's who seem: a) most experienced or b)the most enthusiastic about helping

hope this helps

Thanks man. Sorry if this was already covered. I tried to find stuff on this model yesterday, but I couldn't find anything. I'll try again, putting the brandname in the search is probably a good idea.

:EDIT:

I just searched again, and I still can't find anything useful. Not even a mention of this model.

If Aoshima are anything like Fujimi, shaded in parts means that they are not used for this particular kit. Generally, for a kit like the veilside rx7, which uses the majority of parts from a standard/regular kit, the extra/not used parts are simply there because it's cheaper to include the whole tree (from the stock car) than to create a new one with just the required parts. If they can be used as alternative parts then bonus.

Welcome to AF ozzy, you probably dont remember me, but i am also from the modifiers forum, all i can say about that is... Plastic is better , for the instructions i say, just try your best to make sense of it, fujimi and aoshima instructions aren't the greatest, and half of the stuff doesnt show you where to put the part either , but just try and make sense, and make sure you post some progress/completed pics!

good luck,
SonyMobile

Heh, I thought I'd find some modifier people here who'd recodnize me. I noticed blown civic posted here. Modifiers are cool because they come back apart after you're done, but diecast is very hard. I just had an urge to build a model since I haven't done it in years.

Ah, that makes sense, Duncan. Thanks alot man. I have a fancy custom idea for the stock mirrors on that kit though... fancy indeed... I just need to pick up some paint and my project will be under way. I just got a nice new digital camera, so I'll definately keep you guys updated.

I'm still kinda mad about this thing not having an engine. Part of the reason I opted for an RX-7 was because I like the cars, and wanted to know how the engine is set up, and building a model is a fun way to remember the location of different things. (I payed enough money for it, they should at least give me a frickin' engine.

Its a curbside kit ozzy, the majority of Fujimi, Aoshima,Tamiya and Hasawaga kits are curbside (curbside=no engine) i found it to be a bit of a let down also, and your right, we pay enough for each kit, it would be nice if there was an engine also!

Yeah, the $10 mustang I put together had an engine, why not the $35 rx-7?

I have another question. Should I use a primer with plastic models? I know it helped alot for diecast, but paint seemed to stick well to plastic. So primer or no primer?

Thanks Motard, I guess I should've checked out that post.

I'll have to pick up some nice primer when I get my paints.

What's up RB! Beautiful job on the civic hatch! It turned out great, that was a big project!

I'm trying to get into modeling, this is my first model I'm taking seriously... because it was expensive, lol. I can't go on aim now though, I have to leave for work. I'll talk to you later though.
