I have a 97 Mustang GT V8 and the turn signals just stopped working. My hazard light also stop working. Only the brake light on the spoiler works. I checked the fuse and it wasn't the fuse. I had Firestone to check it out and they told me that they didn't know, but that my bulbs were blown. They wanted to charge me $52.00 for a $4.99 part. So, I went to Pep Boys. They said that the bulbs were fine, but they didn't know why my turn signal and hazard lights were working. I'm going to take it Acme Auto Electric tomorrow, but wanted to see if there is anyone out there who can give me an idea of what I might be looking at. I bought the car brand spankin' new in 1997 so I'm the only owner.

I meant to say that Pep Boys didn't know why my turn signals and hazard lights weren't working (not were working).

what about the headlights?
hazard lights should never go out in conjunction with another system because they are linked independently. the only reason for them to go with the turn indicators has to be related to the lamps and not the actuators, breakers or switches. i know i didn't say much here, but just trying to help.

That sounds like a relay. Turn signals and hazards use the same relay. It is rare that they go out but they do. I had an F150 with the same problem. Replacing the relay fixed it.

Re: No turn signal or hazards
Turn signals and hazard lites may use the same flasher, but that doesn't explain the brake lites. Not a mustang expert, but all the problems listed seem to go to the turn signal switch.

Re: No turn signal or hazards
So assuming that it's the relay....is this expensive to replace?

Re: No turn signal or hazards
Do the newer stangs use 1 relay for both? I know 87-93's use two different ones. Any yes relays are cheap, usuallu with in a few bucks.
There has to be a short somewhere. Did you do something recently, electrical that could be causing a short?

Re: No turn signal or hazards
I'm not sure if it's 1 relay. When I spoke to someone at Firestone, they told me that it was only 1. However, they also told me that I needed new bulbs and I didn't, so I don't trust what they say.
There hasn't been anything done to the car. I got in it one day to take it to get a tire fixed and didn't have any signals. I thought that maybe they were just acting up again, because previously I would hear it blink really fast, but wouldn't see the light flashing. If I waited a few seconds and tried it again, then it would work. However, this only happened a few times. But, I'm guessing this was a warning that something was about to go out. |

WoW! That's weird, the very same thing just happened to my girlfriends 98 Mustang LX today. She had a tire blowout on the interstate and turned on the hazard lights while changing to the spare. After she got back in the car she had no turn signal or hazards. The tail lights come on fine with the head lights. Same deal with only the spoiler brake light working also. All fuses look fine too. So MSLEGGZ, what did the Electrical Shop say it was? Was it the relay? |

Hello Everyone,
Thanks so much for all the replies. I got my Mustang back and everything is working. It turned out to be the turn signal/wiper switch and the turn signal flasher relay. It cost me $261.00. |

Re: No turn signal or hazards
I think I win this one on diagnostics. Not trying to give myself a "attaboy"-but when your trying to diagnose a multiple problem failure you need to find the point where all the systems come together. In this case, all the symtoms pointed to theT/S switch.

A excuse me but it was not just the T/S switch it was also the relay like I mentioned. NO relay no flash. Just wanted to throw that in there while you were sitting there patting yourself on the back.

![]() eillob, the only reason the relay went is because there was a short from the mulit-function switch. LOL
