'98 Camry Stock Alarm - Glass-Break Sensor
I have the stock alarm that came with my '98 Camry. It's a VIP RS3000. My problem is that the glass-break sensor works terribly. The manual for the VIP RS3000 says that knocking on the driver's side window (while the alarm is set) should set the alarm off. If it does not, it gives you directions on how to find the sensor-box and adjust the sensitivity. Well, I turned the sensitivity all the way up (max) and it still picks nothing up. The only way I can get it to recognize anything is to sit in the car with the alarm set and scream into the microphone sensor. It's hilarious. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and/or can tell me how to fix it.
Thanks, Daniel |

Re: '98 Camry Stock Alarm - Glass-Break Sensor
Well, I have a '99 with the stock V.I.P. in it, and I've got plenty of horror stories to tell about that security setup. But I've never really heard of anyone having one where they could knock on the window and set the alarm off. Although I know mine's set a stock setting, I haven't adjusted anything, and I can throw a lighter at the window and it will set the alarm off. How can you adjust the sensitivity though? Maybe I can tinker around with mine and get back to you with some results and stuff.

The glass-break sensor control (not the mic) is located just above the end of the left cowling, near the left foot-rest. You adjust the sensitivity screw with a screw-driver. 1 - low sensitivity, 11 - high sensitivity.
If you want an illustration, the alarm manual is at: http://www.4runners.org/images/rs300...m%20Manual.pdf Glass Break Sensor Programming is on page 23. |

All right, I'll have to check that out, and see if I can't adjust mine to where you can knock on the window and set the alarm off. This will be an interesting thing to keep me busy over this weekend.

Re: '98 Camry Stock Alarm - Glass-Break Sensor
Do you know of any other places online where I can find documentation like that in the link you sent me for all models of the V.I.P. System? I'd really appreciate it.

Here is a manual for the installation on a '97 4Runner:
http://www.4runners.org/images/rs300...%20Install.pdf That's the only other documentation I was able to find. |

I'll have to check that one out, I'm also probably going to look around on the internet sometime soon and see what I can find in the ways of documentation on the V.I.P. system. I looked a little bit last night, although I wasn't able to find anything.

try tapping the glass with the tip of your key.... it creates an actual breakage....if you tap with your hand it makes a thump and it would go off alot while if you tap with a metal object it is more sharper sound and the mic thinks that some one is trying to break in.....

Re: '98 Camry Stock Alarm - Glass-Break Sensor
You know, I never actually thought about what truco said, but he's right. The key would emit a very sharp sound for the reciever to pick up. I'm actually going to have to try that one on mine sometime soon.
