How many miles can i expect out of a 1998 3.8v6

I got 175,000 out of a 95

i got 215k out of an 88 and i junked it cause i bought a new car it still ran fine

I have 190,000 on my 1990 Buick Park Ave and it still runs as smooth as the day I bought it. That car will probably give you a reliable 180,000 miles at least if you take good care of it.

The engine will last forever, if you:

1. Change the oil every 2000-3000 miles
2. Do not rev the engine over 2000 rpms until it's warmed up.

I've seen 3800's with 700000 miles!

I can't even begin to imagine that any engine could last 700,000 miles.

Next time your in a taxi, have a look at the odometer, generally very high milage, 400000 and upwards. That particular car that has 700000 miles is a 1991 buick park avenue, driven by I think a 70 yr old man. The mechanic at the dealer I go to showed me his car when I was there for service. The old mans car was there for an oil change!

700000 does seem like a bit much. figure on a 10 year average, thats close to 200 mile every day DAY for 10 straight years. thats a lot of driving for an old man.

In any event, I can't believe the bearings, rings, valve springs etc could hold up that long. then there are all the little things that go wrong like electrical parts, computers, fuel pupmps, sensors.

With all that driving, he'd never have time to do the work on it./ And theres no doubt in my mind, something had to break in all that mileage

I think a more reasonable explaination is that his speedometer was broken!!!

I was skeptical too, until I saw it for real! Of course it has needed maintenence like you've mentioned. I'm merely stating that the car has lasted a long time.

The car obviously was not driven short distances all the time. It may have had several cross country trips. I'll ask my mechanic about it next time I have to go there (hopefully not for a while!!!)

Not to make buick fans mad because my 93 park avenue sc ultra has 3.8L with 230,000 on it but it was proven that the now discontinued Ford 5.0L if very very well mantained was able to run for almost 1,000,000 miles. Don't believe me, talk to Ford and people who have had vehicles with 5.0L V8 engines in them. A car can last a person as long as the person wants it to. Given eventually trannys and engines have to be overhualed but if a person is willing to mantain a vehicle very well you wouldn't have to do that for decades depinding on how much you drive. I am the type of person who so long as I have enough money I will keep the same vehicle untill the parts for it become obsolite.
