stalling issue when coasting through gears

I've got a 93 Taurus, 3.8 liter, thats been stalling in a very predictable way. I have been observing the engine light for a while now and experiencing a studder as I go down (not up) through the gears. This is after bitting the bullet and rebuilding the tranny to get rid of FORD's aluminum piston mistake.

More recently I have started stalling when coasting to lower speed especially around 35 and 25 mph. This never happens on accel and never at highway speed. It seems as long as I am giving it some gas I don't stall. After stalling sometimes I have to power brake to get going again. But while driving on slower roads and letting off the gas on a hill or something I stall, especially around 35. All that is while driving in overdrive. Now I have learned that I can drive in Drive and the stalling does not happen as readly. And the surging and lights and potential stall all happens around 27 to 25 mph. I always get the engine light to iluminate with this as well. The code is a 157 which says mass air flow, sensor signal voltage is too low. Went and cleaned the wires on the MAF, no good. Went and replaced the MAF no difference, I have all of the same symptoms. I reset the codes and as soon as I get the (engine light) stall or near stall I recapture the code, 157.

Has anyone experienced something like this? What other sensors in the fuel system could cause the MAF to give me an engine light. Throttle position? Manifold absolute pressure? Air bypass valve? Could the new MAF sensor be bad too?
