98 Grand Am GT hesitates under heavy acceleration
I have a 98 GA GT (2.4L, 5 speed) which is having occasional problems with heavy acceleration. This problem occurs rarely and sporadically. Has happened when the car is cold and warm. The car hesitates when placed under heavy acceleration. If I let up on the gas pedal, it's works fine. It's only when I really try to accelerate quickly that it has problems. There are no warning lights or check engine lights on. I've changed the fuel filter, plugs, and air filter on a regular basis. When acceleration is light, the car is perfect. My own experience makes me think that it's either a bad ignition module or a bad fuel pump. Anyone else had this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yea my car does this. mostly when i just start the car. Its your CTS (coolant temp sensor) replace that and it should go away.

Hey thanks for the advice. I was a little hesitant to start replacing any sensors because I didn't have a check engine light on, but I changed that CTS sensor because it was only $7. Car has been running great for about 600 miles. No more hesitation.

I thought the Grand Am's were supposed to do that. When my car is at idle in park I will rev the engine and it goes to 5 RPM's then it sounds like it's starting to bog out. Or if I'm spinning tire in snow it will do it then, too.
My mechanic said (My uncle), that does that so people don't blow their engine. it's like like a security for the engine. Is that true or was he joking with me? |

Gary,
I've got a '96 GA GT with a 3.1L V-6. It has a rev-limiter. When my car is in park, it will only rev up to about 4K RPM before the limiter kicks in. Then it fluctuates if I keep the pedal on the floor. So your uncle wasn't pulling your chain. The spinning in snow thing is probably your traction control kicking in. |

Thanks for the reply,
I always wondered about that..cause when I'm spinning in the snow..it does the same thing as if I were in park at full throttle, it feels like I'm losing power. Gary Quote:
