Tinging noise under heavy acceleration

Hi everyone,
I'm a new one to the forum... didn't actually know a forum like this existed. I knew they were around for computers, but never for cars... have been looking forever. Seems to be a pretty cool place.

Well... I have a question. I just purchased a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis LS w/ a 4.6L V8. I couldnt help but notice that whenever I really burry into it I hear a tinging noise coming from what I THOUGHT was the muffler. It's can't be the muffler because when I rev it in park it doesn't mark the noise. Does anybody know what that could be? It's a real nice car, nice and powerful (my mom is afraid of it lol). But, that tinging noise is just really annoying me. I'm 16 and I go to vo-tech for automotive, so it wouldn't be a problem to fix as long as it's not too expensive.

If you guys could help me on that one, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks a lot guys!

- Josh

P.S. I just remembered... when the RPMs went a little low when I was slowing down and tranny was downshifting I did hear it just a little bit.

Check air filter, and get some dri-gas or Heet to put in the tank. A tune up couldn't hurt either.

A little more detail on the sound would be helpful, also.

Try a tank of premium gas, if this helps check the egr valve make sure that it is working. and then follow this webpage.

Re: Tinging noise under heavy acceleration

Hey,
It doesn't do it with premium gasoline, and fuel injector cleaners just make it worse. However, I did get a chance to make a low quality recording of what it is. I definitely think it has something to do with the valves. Here are the recordings:

http://www.putertopia.com/~putertopia/wtf1.mp3
http://www.putertopia.com/~putertopia/wtf2.mp3

All you should hear is pure engine, none of that background rattling noise. That background rattling noise is the suspect. It does it whenever throttle is past 40-50 percent, and it seems to be doing it a little more every week.

nice sounding car...

if it doesn't make the sound with premium gas then you are just experiencing some slight detonation at wide open throttle. very normal on these 4.6l.

a few things to take care of it:

1: run seafoam through the pcv (or)
2: run chevron w/ techron through the gas a few times (or)
3: take it in for a 'professional' cleaning
4: get a coolant flush, if it hasn't been done in a while. this will keep things cooler and will prevent detonation.

if you have a chip in the car you may want to get some colder plugs as well. maybe even cooler thermostat.

do not cheap out and keep running premium gas... it will make things worse, creating even more carbon deposits.

Re: Tinging noise under heavy acceleration

Great...

Thanks a lot. I've been asking a lot of people lately what that is, and that sounds right what you were sayin'. Thanks a LOT. I can flush the radiator at my school, but I think the cleaning I'll just take it in for.

By the way that crown vic is SWEET lookin on ur d/p. Where can you get chips for these? I'm not running one, but I'd like to do some stuff to try to get a little extra power out of it (but nothing insane). I'm going to try to get some quieter flowmasters and convert to dual exaust, chip if possible, and a posi rear end (I have a lot of problems in the rain, like hardcore, have to be real careful when accellerating), and a few other things here and there. But I am going to soon make a new topic and ask a few things if people think I'm insane for wanting it in this car or not lol. Thanks again man, appreciate it.
