Creative or just Criminal?

I want a Skyline too, but can not afford the $45k+ they fetch here. I know they're legit and ready to go, but:

-assuming you get one imported...cant you just register it as some old maxima through the DMV, get the Maxima paperwork, smack the license plates on the Skyline, and use it as a track car (drag/road car)...but keep the Maxima in your backyard...

If you dont drive it too often, it might just work...
Dont think the cops will assume otherwise cuz "it's just a 1990 Maxima with a bodykit officer"...

Just thinkin.....cuz well...i got time....

Ummm NO.

And I seriously doubt you could pass a skyline off as a Maxima with a Kit. They don't even remotely close in shape or size.

Re: Creative or just Criminal?

Here's why you can't just get one through that way, even though it sounds easy. Once the car arrives in the US, customs will not just give you the vehicle, it has to be given to a RI (Registered Importer). Unless under special rules, Off-Road/racing use only, which have special requirements you have to meet before they'll allow it released, or under show car rules, which they have a limited list of vehicles that are allowed, and requires paperwork as to why it is so special as one, since the Skyline can be legally imported, they won't allow it that way.
Now, for them to release the vehicle, it needs a VIN number. And they won't allow you near it for you to be able to put one on. Also, they won't allow it out on the roads until that VIN is registered with DOT.
Granted, the state DMV and cops can most likely be fooled into allowing it to be registered, but Customs is smart enough to know that it can't be released onto the streets and aren't easily fooled bacause they are used to people trying things like that. Also, because they probably get a kick out of knowing that someones new toy is stuck there and will be crushed after a year because they tried to get away with breaking the rules.

i think a 240sx coupe would be a close match just make sure the 240 is hidden or something. you could send the vin to japan or whereever and have the owner put it on befor he sends it over

If you want a skyline so bad, I've heard (notice: rumor) that theres a 2grand or 3grand body conversion kit for an s14 or somethin or other that makes the car look almost perfectly like an R32, and you could buy an R32 engine and all that good stuff... and you'd have your "skyline".
