Flat Black

ok I am VERY interested in painting my 91 rx7 flat black this spring, so I would like any pictures of cars painted flat black, any websites you know that give any info or details about flat black paint jobs and the actual prduct and so forth, also has anyone here done this? some guy on the 240sx thread said he used like krylon flat black spray paint and did it himself it took like 8 cans at $2.50 a can! he had a couple pictures but none close up to where you could acctually see the quality of it, I have a feeling I would screw up bad doing it myself so I'm looking for some info on it...

anyone know if this would be cheaper/more expensive than a regular paint job? or even how much it might cost?

post anything you think may help

Re: Flat Black

There's not much to get wrong (compared to glossy) buy a can of flat black, and spray it on something to see if you like it. If it's too coarse for your taste, you might try a "satin" black paint (either that or you're sparying it too dry - it can turn out perfectly hideous, and will have a tendency to scrape off real easily, if you spray it too dry)

Re: Flat Black

there's a thread about this in the 240 forum...
rattle cans, scuff the surface, prime, paint...
dry...
voila...

Re: Re: Flat Black

Wait, so you still have to get primer before you can paint? Its just black.. do you really need primer?

Re: Re: Re: Flat Black

You don't have to use primer, but you do have to rough up the surface, unless you want it to flake and scrape off really easily.
I don't really know what the attraction is to flat black...

Re: Flat Black

I like it cuz its different and I could do it myself for cheap... plus I'm go before show and that kinda makes a point of it I guess.

so basically I have to sand it all down then spray it on? or acctually scrath the surface to make it stay on?

Re: Re: Flat Black

Sand it down. If you were truly "go before show" you'd just never wash your car, and let the paint oxidize and turn flat on its own (of course it'd already have to be black)

well its red, and probably the original paint. Usually I don't wash my car anyways, just gets dirty the second you drive it. I have a friend with a Z28 camaro that spends 2 hours washing his car every saturday afternoon. What a waste of 2 hours... while hes spending 2 hours washing his car I'm spending 2 hours finding and driving the coolest roads in the county :P

Re: Re: Re: Flat Black

So, if you were going to spray paint a car, you would have to find a way to rough up the surface? Do you have any suggestions how?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Flat Black

I'd assume you'd do it the old fashioned way. Unless there's some miracle, new-age replacement for sand paper?

... An electric sander? I'd think that qualifies. Sure, sure, it still uses sandpaper (a sandbelt) but at least it's not manual.

I'm assuming that the mag that you are reffring to is Sport Compact Car, and yes they did paint their 240 flat black using spraypaint. But that car was never intended to be a drift car. Although i DO agree that copying something someone else did isnt xactly original...

but flat black is still leet, no matter what

Re: Flat Black

acctually that was a recent thing, I talked to a guy on the 240sx board about his car, cuz his is flat black, about a month or so before that ever came out, plus the flat black on the 240 in the sport compact car magazine isn't really the exact look I'm going for... theirs almost looked like a normal black... didn't read it so I'm not sure what they used for it. but basically its way cheaper than a normal paintjob so it sounds like a good option, and ok so its not totally original, but if you wanna get all technical then most things that people say are original, nothing on cars is original because they mass produce all the products, so shut up about me wanting to do it cuz of some gay magazine... I'm not a fagget ricer that copies off 2fast 2 furious or super street. I look more twards option videos myself, if you know what those are. to me, its like an anti-showcar type thing, I hate stupid stains like you that think only you acctually know about drifting, oh and what color is your car? I bet more people have that color than flat black so stfu noob.
