Question thinking about getting a blow off valve...

all right...since my baby is getting a new turbo i was thinking about getting a blow off valve...i know there are dozens to choose from. i don't have a great knowledge about these things so i don't know what the "best" one to get would be. my friend suggested the TurboXS H-RFL. i found it on ebay for $130. what do you guys suggest? also if someone could tell me some advantages of having a blow off valve, that would be great (other than "you hear the lovely PSSSHHHTTTTT" sound)...

thanks for the help

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

well first off the biggest advantage, is that a quality BOV will allow you to boost that new turbo you are buying. the stock bov was only good to around 14-15psi and i have heard that they leaked like a all hell. secondly you will only get that cool pssshhhhtttt sound if you get a BOV that dumps to atmosphere. which this is good, but if you are running a large turbo you can create a rich state in between shifts. a MAF translator claims that they account for the rich state when dumping to atmosphere. but the MAF translator is a whole other thread. so the other option is you can recirculate your BOV into the intake solving your "rich between shifts problem" but you wont have the "cool" pssshhhhttt sound when you shift. a crushed 1G is always a good option, i havn't heard anything on the HKS super sequential yet. i have a blitz BOV, dumped to atmosphere, and dont have any complaints, but i am also still on a t-25. hope this helps.

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

all right that sounds pretty good...i think i'll get that TurboXS BOV then. i mean i do want the pssshhhttttt sound but every time i ask someone "what are some advantages to having a BOV?" they respond with the "you'll have the psshhhttt sound" answer...also didn't realize the stock BOV leaked so much...but one other thing. does anyone own the TurboXS RFL? if so, how do you like it? i can't find any reviews on this BOV.

thanks for the help

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

Personally I like the Greddy type s. Haven't had any experience with the turbo xs or blitz. Although the "psshhhttt" sound, as you call it, isn't incredibly pronounced, you still get a nice sound between gears. And everyone will know you're commin anyway

There are no 'advantages' to a BOV. Either it works for what you need, or you need to upgrade. Some people get tired of the RFL, and you will grow out of it too. Decide what you NEED based on how much you are flowing (what turbo you want the BOV to be able to match with)

Most brand BOV's will be able to do fine, and are definately better than the 2g stock one.

Then there are the 'best' BOV's.. which are going to be more expensive, but they will be able to flow a lot of air very well. Tial is one of them, I forgot the other. Remember that some BOV's vent to the air, and you need to compensate for that for certain reasons.

option 1:vent to the atmosphere, lose performance and gas mileage

option 2:or recirculate and be happy

choose one
chances are your bov is leaking while boosting, what bov is it?
and AFC wont help that

an AFC might help optimize your gas milage by 2mpg, but remember.. the kind of person that HAS an S-AFC is the kind of person to go WOT more often than a normal driver.

think of it like this.. if a turbo increased gas milage, you'd think you would save money. Why don't you? because you like the feel of spoolin 24/7.

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

don't even bother to vent your BOV. get a GReddy type-s, you will be more than happy with it and it is adjustable. the sound is still very much there, especialy if you have an aftermarket air filter. mine is still loud as hell. with adjustability, i can make it stiff for racing and loosen it when i want to drive in canyons to prevent it from bucking when you close the throttle in the same gear. also, when upgrading BOV you will want to do your upper intercooler pipes too. check out RRE for cheap pipes [dejon tools] that can be made to fit any BOV you want.

i was refering to all the benefeits you gain by upgrading from the stock BOV. i would consider them advantages because they allow you to perform better than stock. an aftermarket BOV gives you the "advantage" of being able to boost your car.

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

I would second the HKS SSQ. This blow off valve is garenteed not to leak. Rather than it being pushed open by boost it is pulled open, and it also has a releaf for low boost and high boost.

Its a good design, and a high price, but worth it.

Re: thinking about getting a blow off valve...

The other one is SARD perhaps, Joewagon. But the SARD and Tial have to be vented, requiring a VPC or MAFT. I ran vented for years, but I still tell people its not worth it. The RFL actually runs pretty well vented, but its a piece. That thing leaks like no tomorrow. The Greddy is ok, but I'm not a fan of it. I wont list my reasons, since I have never persoanlly worked with one. And I have no experience with the other ricer brands either. The 1g BOV is a very nice BOV up to 25 psi, and easily vents back in. Nice selection of UICPs to go with it as well.
