UPDATE: Missfiring and backfiring on 89 cherokee 4.0

Just found out today what the prolbem was with this jeep. The CPS has to be set so its tip is like .020 from the flywheel. We set this one and it started right up and runs better than it ever has. Guess that the computer needs it very close to the flywheel to get a good reading and make the engine run right. Thanks for all your suggestions. But the sencer had holes that fit the bolts tight and we had to file them a little larger to let the sencer drop closer to the flywheel for jest the right gap. Hope this helps some of these other people with the same type prolbems. Good luck
