I have a '95 Grand Am se with a 3.1 in it. i've had to 2 mechanics look at it and they can't figure out why at 53mph and above the car runs bad ,shakes, misses and pulsates. They gave it a tune-up, changed the coil, new EGR valve, they even tried a new computer.
The only diag code that comes up is that #2EGR valve is not operating. I have no clue on what is wrong, could it be exhaust (converter),fuel pump, a sensor? It also seems to miss at stop lights or when slowing down to stop. The car runs great inner city driving, no problems what so ever. The check engine light comes on when I drive on the freeway but not right away. i bought the car with this problem, the dealer and I thought it was just in need of a tune-up. They are more then willing to fix it for free but can't figure it out what it is. They even had the tranny looked at. Also can anyone tell me where i can find interior parts like a cluster, but not the guages just the plastic piece to cover them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me nuts!! |

I was reading in my Haynes manual about the VSS(vehicle speed sensor). It controls the operation of the Torque Converter Clutch(TCC)
system. You may want to mention it to your mechanic. A problem I had with my Mazda where it would hesitate/stutter at about 3500 rpm ended up being the Mass Airflow sensor. All I had to do was clean it with brake cleaner and it fixed it. Also if you are still getting the EGR code I would definitely have them follow that problem. Could be clogged ports on the intake manifold where the EGR valve connects. Good luck! |

I had this exact same problem about two years ago, it turned out to be a sensor that controls when your transmission shifts to a different gear after 50 mph, I think the price was 200$ to replace. hope this helps.

Re: '95 Grand Am pulsating at 53mph and above
I had the same problem with my car. Once I headed into overdrive, the car would vibrate if I stayed between 50mph and 65mph. Turns out it needed a new fuel injector. Problem solved.
Now if I could only get the darn Check Engine light to turn off after I go into and exit overdrive ... |

Re: '95 Grand Am pulsating at 53mph and above
i had a problem with my 93 grand am, where over 50.. it would miss and pulsate.. as if i was going to stall.. or even made me think it was a transmission problem... ended up having to replace the Spark Plug Wires, and that fixed the problem.

Re: '95 Grand Am pulsating at 53mph and above
I have a 95 Grand Am SE and just recently my car would shake between 55 and 60 mph. I had my tires balanced, fuel filter changed and nothing seemed to work. I took it to a local mechanic who found out that my coil packs were bad and that I would need to replace the plug wires. He also told me that the plate which is underneath the coil packs and which helps in the firing was stripped. Also an alignment was needed. This cost me around $300.00. But the good news is that my car is no longer shaking.

Try a top quality fuel injector emission cleaning from a quick lube shop or a dealer, normally anywhere from $50 - $100. Should take them about 20 - 25 minutes to perform this service, its aliquid that is put in thru the vacuuum tube going into the injectors. That should help clear up the missing problem. If not then replace the injector ports. Then try using a better grade of gas, 92 or 93 octane and use an injector cleaner every 3000 miles there after.
The shaking could be the brake rotors. They are probably warped. Hope these help some. |
