Also what may be better and why Changing the heads on my D16y7 with the D16A6 or the D16Z6 I read that the D16Y8 was pointless

Y8 pointless? That's considered the king of the D-series behind the DOHC ZC D-series motor. The Y8 has VTEC while the A6 supposedly has better flow through it, though that's been debated to no end about the flow of either of those 2 heads and which flows better. I don't hear as often of Z6 head swaps, I always hear about A6 or Y8 head swaps.

Out of curiosity, what was the reason that someone said the Y8 head is pointless in what you read on it? I've always been told that's the head to get if I can get it.

I was told that the Y8 and the Z6 the only difference it 2hp and that all the ratios match that of the D16y7 so would be better and more cost effective to go with the z6 and would be pointless to spend all the extra money for the y8 for just 2 hp. I dont know if I aggree it looks like the y8 has a better compression rate and the torque seems a little better, I don't know much about this stuff since this will be my first race ride. I have another question when I talk to people at my local illegal street races and mention a DOHC D series engine no matter who I talk to says they don't exist but I know they do so the question is is there any bennifet in the DOHC D series or will the SOHC D Series be just fine...

Re: Vtech Acceptable D16?

the dohc you speak of is the zc. while it is a good motor i would stick with a y8 or z6 they are supposedly more relieable. check d-series.org for more info they are pretty smart guys over there.

Re: Vtech Acceptable D16?

unless I'm mistaken, the D16A6 doesn't have a VTEC head, unless the one in my old 90 EX had a head swap done. Or we're talking about a different engine I am oblivious to

D16Z6 ('92-'95 EX/Si hatchback)

D16Y5 ('96-'00 HX, E-VTEC rather than normal VTEC)

D16Y8 ('96-'00 EX)

I'd go Y8 head over Z6 as I don't see very many swaps to a Z6 head. Another rule of thumb is no one in their right mind would swap to a Y5 HX head

Re: Vtech Acceptable D16?

I personally would go with a D16Y8, over the Z6. It is not much more money for the Y8 head, and the Y8 is newer, usually meaning less miles have been put on it.

No, you didn't misread, they did say A6, and you're right it is NOT a vtec head. The difference between the Z6 and Y8 is the intake manifold, that's why it produces two more Hp.

And to silent runner, you need the suffix at the end, since the D16Y5/7 are not vtec and the D16Y8 is. If you have the Y5/7 you can swap either head Z6 or Y8, but the A6 is pointless.

oh my goodness, do you post anything worth while at all. If you read through the damn thread we've already made it clear that the D16Z6/Y8 are VTEC motors.

Correction...

The D16Y5 (HX motor) IS VTEC, but it's not the same VTEC as the D16Y8 (EX) motor. It has the more MPG friendly E-VTEC system, but it's still VTEC even if it's not the worthy enough version.
