Re: vtech vs. vtech-e
Ok because you obviously didn't understand the phone reference...Its VTEC, not VTECH, and the difference...yes the E is for economy, meaning that while the engine is not under high loads and while at low RPM the engine will close one intake valve, gaining you economy. When you punch it, it will open it up and function normally.

Re: vtech vs. vtech-e
vtec-e is just the economy version of the vtec system. It bascially uses the cam timing more for better gas mileage and less fuel consumption. It doesn't however have that edge which normal vtec has which is getting some extra power in the upper rpms. I wouldn't go for it unless you either A) want the fuel economy or B) just want to have it in your car so you can say you have vtec. But it would be interesting to see how the car would do with the CVT tranny taken out and a ex 5spd tranny bolted up. Hmmmmm.

You should see how many people try to sell their civics on autotrader with their vtech engines. I bet they get great reception... um... yeah.

![]() In normal VTEC; there's a high and low cam profile(two low-profile lobes and one high one inbetween them). When VTEC "kicks in", it simply switches from hi to low(connects all the rockers together). In VTEC-E, there are still low and hi profiles, except the low profile lobes are staggered(one opens normally, while the other one barely opens the valve; creates a swirl the helps suspend the a/f mixture). The hi-profile on the VTEC-E engine is usually a little milder than regular VTEC's low profile but not as aggressive as the high-profile. I believe the cam profile widths are also different from the regular VTEC ones(thinner, maybe) |

Re: vtech vs. vtech-e
No..the cam timing is set per profile..the cam gears are directly attached to the camshaft, and are driven by the belt...unless the cam lobe is actually in a different time than the low profile the timing wont change by any other means.
