Unhappy Is it the Transmission?

Hello
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I have a 89 Plymouthe voyager. the other day (out of the blue) it started pulling hard to the right and I would here a knocking sound comming from the right front tire. It would do this for about two minutes than stop and run fine than start again. Than just when i was about a block from hame I turned a corner and as i was turning I herd a very loud crunch. I pulled over and killed the engin to take a look. When I got back in and started it and put it in drive it makes a very scarry crunching noise. It makes the same sound in 1st and reverse. I was told that my trans mission is shot. Than I was told it might be the berrings or somthing else.
My mechanic is on vacation. Does anyone have any ideas
