Is this a problem with the Transmission???

When put into gear there is a ticking/scraping noise. This does not happen when in Neutral or Park. Could this be the transmission going?

this needs more info ...in gear ok ...what speed ? does this frequency of the noise increase with speed ? engine RPM ? turning left/right....

check tires / brake shields/ worn brake pads...[wear indicators]

If this occurs with the trans in gear while standing still, there might be a converter problem.

As j cAT advised, more detail would be helpful.

Never heard a ticking sound from transmission . most ticking sounds come from loose heat shields on the exhaust.

A ticking sound could indicate loose torque converter mounting bolts ... or a broken flexplate (which can also scrape).

The sound doesnt seem to speed up or slow down with accelleration. Even when idling in gear its just there. When in neutral or park no sound at all. The car is shifting normally as I drive. I checked the transmission fluid and it was fine. The actual only difference in the car is just the added noise that showed up yesterday. The sound does seem to be coming from the drivers side area...but i could be wrong.

If the transmission was ever replaced it is common for the flywheel bolts to be improperly installed ....removal of the flywheel cover and inspect for proper torque of all bolts...

also with this cover removed with the vehicle in gear listen for this noise as the torque converter is there...this may be the issue as well..

One time on a new vehicle it was an improperly installed flywheel cover rattling in gear,,,,

Flexplate bolts should be 74-75 ft/lb, and torque converter bolts should be 44-45 ft/lb.
