Cheap Street

That's the original Z I'm talking about. I was just rolling around some ideas in my head for building myself a cheap low 12 high 11 second car for around 5-6k (including purchase price). Any of these car will do it, but what would be your choice? Please don't suggest a tuner, I want a car will balls (torque) that has a deep throaty tone.

Re: Cheap Street

first choice would be the nova

second choice would be the IROC. Ive riddin in one with a juiced up 305, headers and flowmasters, and that thing would really scream

Hard choice...

See I own both a '72 Nova and a '72 240z... My Nova has a built 383 small block pushing 425hp/440tq. MY 240z is currently stock.

If you're really on a low budget, I'd say go for a 240z project car. Lightweight chassis with a mild 350 V8 and you're talking some low ETs.

Problem is, if you do a 240z project you have to replace everything in the driveline if you want it to last... Datsun never intended a shit load of torque to be applied to its drivetrain. So doing that may push your budget over...

A Nova, which is fairly lightweight at about 3200-3300lbs depending on options, you just need to build the motor, have the tranny built to take the power, and have a posi unit put into the rearend and you're set. At least with it you're just updating the drivetrain to handle the power rather having to buy and replace it all like you would with the 240z.

Mustang 5.0 isn't a bad choice, light weight and great aftermarket support.

Re: Cheap Street

Why would you want a Stang w/a 4 banger?

Re: Cheap Street

The fox body with a 5.0 is a difficult combo not to pick simply because that engine in that chassis likely offers the largest variety of quality aftermarket parts. It really is mind-blowing when you start looking through all of the parts choices.

The problem is this car has been done so often in so many ways that originality is definately not this combos' strong suit. The most original exterior mod you can probably do to a 87-93 Fox-body stang now is to return it to a stock appearance. I like the 5.0 fox's, but if you don't want to see yourself coming and going stay away.

Ironically, the more aerodynamic, more comfortable, better handling, and arguably prettier fox-based 83-88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe is virtually ignored as hot rod material. Nearly all the same aftermarket parts work on both fox cars, and by 87 the Turbo Coupe offered much better suspension and brakes. Except for a little less weight on the pony I cannot think of a single area where the Mustang bested the Bird. (Looks are subjective, but IMO the 87-88 Turbo Coupe was far prettier than any fox body Mustang except the SVO)

My choice after that would be the IROC with the smallblock in it, because these cars are a dime a dozen. Parts are easily found and the newer LT1 and LS1 smallblocks drop right in. Also, IMO this was a much better looking car than the 4th gen f-bodies.
