VR4 is pretty good, stock 3000 is OK, but both are heavy.

base model 3000GT's are pathetic. only 160hp on a 3300lb frame. the SL model stands for SLow and has only 220hp for a 3300lb frame, and they both are front wheel drives, which suck. then you have the top of the line VR-4 which has All wheel steering, and All wheel drive and has 320hp from the factory. now those fast. and should not be in the category as the base model.

Still heavy though...And the Vr4 transmission is pathetically weak. Yogs...Any input??

Re: Is the 3000GT a powerful car for drag and street racing??

the stock trans is from getrag.
i don't see that as being weak at all.
i've seen a couple highly modded ones, one making almost 1000hp, and it's on the stock trans. it eats clutches though.
there's also 4 others that are built by the shop that does my work. two are on aftermarket turbos, one of those is pushing 500+ to the wheels. stock trans.
the other is more stock, but still making 350+.
the tranny is more than capable of handling the power...

i guess those guys are smarter cuase they opt for a clutch that slips alittle so it puts less strain on tranny from those high rpm clutch drops.

Hmmm that's odd. My Stealth had alot of tranny problems. Heck at the time I couldn't even get a 3rd gear synchro w/o rebuilding the tranny (The year was 2000). The car leaked tranny fluid like crazy.

dunno why. those cars aren't always 100% dependable...
major issues, like you said, with things like the ecu, and all that electronically controlled shiet...
and i've heard about the tranny problems, but haven't seen anything on these cars

they are to heavy to be super fast. They are decent for day to day.

which ones are you talking about exactly?
are you talking vr4, or the regular fwd models?
ever ridden in a modded vr4? it's not slow at all.

hello people, my vr4 is at 145,000 miles and the tranny has never been replaced, you guys are familiar with my mods and only my clutch had to be changed. as far as racing from a roll, my car hauls ass on the roll, iknow you think about the awd and i'm not saying its as fast as a supra or cobra from a roll but its not slow from a roll at all! check out my story at the bottom when i raced a vette from a roll and we were even, i'm modded but he had an exhaust system. i've had no major probs from my car besides the normal timing belt change at 100,000 miles. i drove my car from seattle to arkansas and back last june, still movin like the wind.
BUT, for drag racing, no its not a good choice, street racing hell yeah but not drag racing, unlike supra's and eclipse's and skyline's the vr4 is yet to drop into the 9's. a highly modded vr4 usually runs mid 11's. but if you go all out they got them running low 10's i think its 10.4, but imo it takes more to get the vr4 to the 10's then it is for a supra or skyline or eclipse. so street racing go for it, but drag racing if your trying to get serious and run 9's and 8's then no stick with a supra or something.
