White smoke coming out of the exaust?

I did carb. cleanup on my brothers Nissan 240SX 1992 and now the car has white smoke coming out of the exaust.

He is going to kill me when he gets back form vacation. What should I do (I put everything back the way they should have been). Maybe I sprayed to-much of that carb. stuff????

Help, please!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: White smoke coming out of the exaust?

It's most likely the head gasket. You get white smoke when either antifreeze or water get into the cylinder. The motor is trying to combust this stuff with the fuel and it turns into white smoke and then comes out the tailpipe. If the engine overheats at all then that can cause the head gasket to fail and the it would let antifreeze into the cylinders. Check the oil and see if any antifreeze got into it. If you look at the oil and it had antifreeze in it then it would look kind of milky. If you do have antifreeze in the oil then replace the oil asap and replace the head gasket as well.

Is the car running hot? Or losing coolant? Do you have water coming out of the exhaust? Or as posted before, is the oil on the dipstick milky in color? If no to all of the above, its most likely not the head gasket.

It's no to all of the above. I only clean the carb. Before that everything was OK?

Re: White smoke coming out of the exaust?

My guess is head gasket. When I got my car we thought we saw blue smoke coming off the exhaust, but white smoke should be the same thing. Also check to see if you spilled anything on or in the exhaust or headers, because that could cause oddly colored smoke.

Used sealant on what? He stated he only used carb cleaner to try and clean up the fuel system.

Check your oil and coolant levels. Check the condition of the spark plugs. If you have no signs of a milky substance for oil on the dip stick, or oil in the radiator, take the car for a ride and see if the smoking will clear up. But before you do that, make sure the oil is oil and all your fluid levels are correct. Keep an eye on the temp gauge. If it starts to run hot, obviously shut it down. When you return, after the car has completely cooled down, check your fluid levels again.

Another good test would be to get a radiator pressure tester, if you pump it up to I think around 11 to 15 lbs and it doesn't leak down, you can almost be sure its not the head gasket, a cracked head or block etc.

I'm not a master mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm not convinced you blew a head gasket by attempting to clean the fuel system either. Before you take any information from here to heart, I would seek other opinions else where and also maybe have a mechanic look at it.

How is the coolant level? Are you losing water, is the car running hot? You could still have a possible head gasket problem or something else (cracked head or block) allowing the coolant into combustion side. It could be leaking coolant into the combustion chamber which would cause your smoke and would not contaminate the oil. What are the condition of the spark plugs? Does the smoke have a odor?

Question

wtf? how do you clean the carb if there isnt one. what exactly did you spay and where did you spray it? 1993 240 is fuel injected. what you describe sounds like head gasket problem but should have nothing do with (throttle body?) cleaning. are you sure it wasnt already smoking? you can buy a test kit called a block test which has a liquid that changes colors if there is exhaust gasses present in your cooling system. this about the best way to determine if there is a cylinder head sealing problem

I was kind of figuring he was referring to the throttle body as the carb too. Gearhear, where do you pick up those test kits, any parts store? That could come in real handy!

I have to admit that the car was smoking before but not as visible as it is dong it now. Also, sorry about carb. misunderstanding (I was cleaning the throttle body).

Where can I buy the test kit that you mention?
