Good place to get ignition switch recall work
I have not yet gotten my ignition switch recall work done on my 1997 CRV. Last year I took it in, but the dealership I went to wanted me to pay about $90 for a harness because I have an after-market alarm on my car.
Is this a standard procedure or am I getting ripped off? Is there somewhere I can go (Houston area) where I won't be charged to get the recall work done? Thanks. Last edited by iluvmycrv; 12-23-2003 at 03:18 PM. |

Re: Good place to get ignition switch recall work
Thats standard for most dealers, 1.0hr of labor for reconnecting/removing the aftermarket parts. Only Honda dealership can perform the recall for *free*. You could buy the parts & take it some where else like an aftermarket shop. Even take your car to the installer & have the alarm disconnected then reconnected after the recall.

Re: Good place to get ignition switch recall work
Quote:
NOTE: Reinstalling aftermarket parts (security systems, alarms, audio systems, etc.) connected to the ignition wiring is not covered under this campaign. If a customer wants a non-Honda part reinstalled, the shop that installed the part (or the customer) must do the work and assume liability. In addition, the customer is responsible for all costs associated with the non-Honda part and its installation. If you have any questions about this, please contact your District Service Manager. Any Honda dealership IS responsible to replace your ignition switch for FREE. As you can see in the quote above ... they are NOT resposible for rehooking up aftermarket alarms etc. We (the dealership) are not supposed to do anything except replace the ignition switch itself. The dealership can NOT refuse to do the ignition switch update because you have an aftermarket alarm installed. By law they HAVE to do it. They just can not rehook the alarm back up. |

Re: Good place to get ignition switch recall work
Yep, I'll go one further. They don't need to charge $90 for a new harness either! Most installs are done far below the ignition switch and isn't anywhere near the ignition. I see many Honda dealers soaking the customers on this. Most everyone else just does what they have to do and sometimes it MAY lead to you going back to the shop that installed the product to rehook up some wires.

The new ignition switch for the CRV comes with a new harness already. You may have misunderstood them about that. What they may have been wanting to charge you $90.00 for is to rehook your alarm system up. The wires from most alarm systems tie into the harness off the ignition switch.
