Thumbs up '01 Silverado 6-1/2" Speaker Install

CAn any of you give me details on replacing the 6-1/2" speakers in the door? How do I remove the old ones? Do I have to remove the panels or just the screen? Please help.

Hey Newbie,

You need to take the complete door panel to remove the speakers cleanly. Otherwise, you will always have problems keeping the screen on. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I was afraid that would happen. Is there a procedure to remove the door panel?

The only advice I have is to be careful and dont force anything. Sometimes, you can call a local stereo install shop and they will give you some pointers. Good Luck

My buddie had told me that once you get all the visible screws out, the panel simply lifts straight up. There are no clips like on previous cars/trucks. Please post outcome and the model # of speakers you install. My 2001 is pre-Bose and sound like s__t.
Happy Holidays.

I DID IT!!! I installed 3 way Rockford Fosgate 6-1/2" speakers today. I did the Driver's door first, and of course it is the most difficult, my truck has Power everything.
Anyone who has about an hour can do this.

1. Pop our the triangle piece at the top of the panel with a flat blade. 2. Pop our the manual door lock, and the panel that covers the door handle.
3. Make sure that if you have power Door locks, windows, and mirrors, that you pop off the panel and unhook them before lifting. Also, the door light comes our with a little tug. I left the light in and dangling during install.
4. There are 3 screws on each door, remove them. One underneath, one under the door handle, and one behind the door latch panel. The previous poster is correct. Once you have the screws out, it literally lifts out.

The stock 6-1/2" speakers have a really cool mounting that you can remove by pushing down on the top and sliding your hand behind to push it out. It hooks at the bottom so you'll have to work it out. You'll have to hold your new speaker up and mark the screw holes. I used 5/16" self tapping screws and put about 4 on each speaker.
Oh yeah, remember not to do what I did and hook up the speakers before you attach it. I bought the adapter to fit the stock wire harness, Best Buy $6.99 for the pair, and it made it sooooooooo simple. After that, just put everything back on. I would run the harnesses through the holes and reconnect them after remounting the door panel.

Start on the Passenger door. It is less difficult and a better place to start.

Overall, I was impressed. I mean, the truck doesn't sound like a kid on the street but it adds enough to notice a difference.

Good luck!!!

Re: '01 Silverado 6-1/2" Speaker Install

one question. the truck has a built in crossover and the tweeter is still in there. if you install a new 4 way 6.5", wont all the highs still be going to the factory tweeter? I mean if you get a set of components, thats fine, but the 4 way in one unit doesnt really do much in termms pof high, while the crossover is in does it? can we bypass the crossover?

I may be wrong, but I think that the crossover only affects the tweet in the door, meaning that the 6.5 gets all frequencies, and the tweet has a high-pass filter.

First of all the factory speakers are not a 6 1/2", they are a 6 3/4". A 6 1/2" will not even cover the opening in the door, not completely anyways. If you are going to use a 6 1/2", you will need to fabricate some sort of bracket or mounting plate. Cruthfield sells these exact snap-in brackets I think for around $12. A 6 3/4" will fit nicely with no brackets or modifications needed. Just align your new speaker and mark your pilot hoes for drilling. Most major speaker manufacturers make a nice 6 3/4" drop-in. Some even have 2 or 3-way component sets that sound excellent. I deal with this everyday, I work for a mobile sound shop in VA. The 4X6's in the rear are another story. You will likely have to replace those with another 4X6 pair, unless you want to do some extensive cutting.

Re: '01 Silverado 6-1/2" Speaker Install

I Put 6 3/4" Pioneer Components And Left The Stock Tweeter In Also. I Drilled A Hole Next To The Lock And Put The New Tweeter There And It Sounds Great. And It Looks Good Too.
