99 Pontiac Grand AM problems - A/C bearing Noise, Oil leak, Over heating
Well group, we bought a 99 Grand Am with 43K mil. on it and so far it appears to have most of the GA problems.
1. When your driving the car it has a high pitch noise coming from the front of the car, when you turn the a/c on the bearing "going out" noise in the a/c or the alternator goes away. Any suggestions here? 2. Oil Leak, according to what I have read on the forum this is a poor engineering flaw that GM has overlooked and is costing us owners about 800$ to have fixed at the dealer. Has anyone done a quick and inexpensive fix on this? forward details Also there is a forum you should sign if you are having the same problems. This forum has 4595 signatures attached already so this is a serious problem that is not going to get better anytime soon. www.petitiononline.com/GMcnsmrs/petition.html 3. Over heating issue seems to be related to another GM flaw in the temperture sensor. 4. I am also getting a periodic gas smell in the cabin in the morning when its cold outside and the car is warming up. Do not see a leak but sure smell something gas realted. Please forward your comments on item 1 and 2 and 4 as it is now time to roll up the sleeves. If your reading this e-mail contemplating the purchase of a good looking low mileage grandam, oldsmobile auroa or similar GM car & drive tran you need to reconsider, these things have lemon written all over them, its also a truly good reason why the Japanese cars are doing so well here in the US. GM has still not stepped up to the bar the way the Japs have and this should truly tell everyone where to search for thier next used or new car. Thanks DDVWAG |

Re: 99 Pontiac Grand AM problems - A/C bearing Noise, Oil leak, Over heating
1) AC bearings on 99 and up grand ams tend to whine but the AC works fine. Dealer wont fix since it doesnt affect preformance.
2) Oil leaks on V6 is common around the cap is common , but it is not uncommon to see it around the Valve cover gaskets. Might just need new gaskets on the valve covers. 3) You may need a new Thermostat , there around 15-20 bucks. If you wanna cool down quick , turn your Defrost on max heat full fan blowing , it helps cool the motor down quick. But check that thermostat , if its worn out could cause problems. Watch for Coolent leaking in the motor , will make the oil kinda milky and will damage the motor. |

Wait a sec on that Valve cover gasket thing , may only be silicone holding the valve covers on the block. Sorry bout that.

Re: 99 Pontiac Grand AM problems - A/C bearing Noise, Oil leak, Over heating
I had a New 1999 GrandAm GT and it was the biggest peice of junk that I had ever bought. It spent more time in the shop for front end problems than you could Imagine. In 30000 mile it had 3 new rackinpinions new rims and tires new arms all the thing did was shake when I went down the road. Just like it had a worped rotor when you put the brakes on. JUNK
