HELP !! Hard start with 89 Camry - Only when COLD !!
Hello everyone
: I have a 89 camry. It takes a lot of cranking to start the car when the engine is cold but starts on the first try when hot. any idea what could be the problem. : Thanks : Faisal

could be a compression issue.
when cold, the rings and seals contract and donot provide as much of a seal. this does not happen as much when it's hot out. of course, this is ONE possible reason.

Can also have to do with the fuel, when the engine is cold it needs extra fuel since it won't vaporize as it does when the engine is hot, if it doesn't get as much extra fuel as it needs the mixture will be lean and a lean mixture is hard to ignite.
The oil is also thicker when the engine is cold, this means that it takes more power to crank it which can lower the speed of the cranking.

not much you can do about the fuel though.
you can switch to a lighter oil, but I wouldn't switch to anything not recommended by the manufacturer. Synthetic oils usually flow better.

Guys thanks for your replies. So it looks like i really cant do much about this problem. About the oil, i got a regular oil change from walmart.
