3.4 vs 3.1
hey there, i just went through that same scenario, and everything i learned said that "no" it is not likely that you can do this. i suppose that you could get custom adapters made and all that, but the biggest problem i saw was that the wiring harnesses are not the same. there are two knock sensors on the 3.4, and only one on the 3.1 but the real show stopper would be the engine control module circuitry. these are not inter-changeable. if you compare these you will find huge differences in the engine blocks as well. your motor mounts will not mate up, and even simple things like the coolant hoses would be a problem. throttle and fuel injection systems are different... the list goes on. i have a spare 3.4 which i was hoping to put into a 95 monte. i ended up re-building the top end of the 3.1 for around $750 in parts.
"HAYNES" offers a good guide for this model car, number 24048, Chevrolet, Lumina, Monte Carlo, & Impala (FWD), 1995 thru 2001 Haynes Repair Manual. ISBN 1 56392 418 8
it is a fairly easy project if you have the right tools, and some medium to high level mechanical skills. good luck! let me know if i can help.
