help needed! Turbo plumbing
Ive getting hold of a turbo which im gonna use on my SR20. Ive basically figured out all the bits i need to fit it, but theres one thing im not too sure of. That is the diameter of piping to use on the compressor side of the turbo. The turbo is just a small T2 and the inlet and outlet pipes on the compressor are only about one and a quarter inches in diameter. My MAF sensor and inlet manifold are about 3 inches in diameter, so what diameter piping do i use??
Ive been told to use a larger diameter, preferbly around the same size as the MAF sensor, on the filter side of the turbo, and to stick as close to the diameter of the compressed side of the turbo, up until the point where it attaches onto the inlet manifold. The larger diameter on the filter side allows more airflow to enter the turbo, and the smaller diameter on the compressed side means that the turbo wont have to fill such a large bore pipe therefore less lag. What d'you reckon??

u can fabricate a pipe that goes from 2" and flares out to be 3" but that might be kinda expensive if you want a nice one. u can also use a 3 inch pipe and just ahve a reducer coupler to hold everything together. if you can, try to find the OEM DET turbo outlet pipe fromt he bluebird...but you have a T2 turbo?

Yeah, the turbo is a T2. I think i might go for the 2" piping, cos it aint to big to effect turbo lag, and doesnt look too thin going around the engine bay. The guys that made my stainless steel exhaust should be able to bend and flare the pipes no probs, they normally just charge for the pipe but as theyre good friends of mine, i'll just bung'em a few quid (slang for UK pounds) They have a hydraulic machine which bends, flares and reduces pipe work, so when i get the turbo and intercooler mounted, i'll just use a length of welding rod, bend into the shape and length of pipe, then take it down and ask him to make it for me. Im lucky cos theyre fairly local, and it shouldnt cost much.
Hey Luke, how much can you supply me with a 2mm Metal head gasket for? and what make would it be?? for my SR20DE that is. My compression is 10:1 standard UK but i need to lower it to at least 9.5:1, same as yours or lower if poss, see what you can sort out for me, Thanks.
