D15b - 125-130hp???

THIS IS A QUOTE BY 91cvicDXdude:

"direct bolt in performance engines:
D16A6 or SOHC ZC - 108hp, great upgrade from DX/LX engine. cheap.
JDM D15B - welcome to VTEC. nice peppy engine, 125-130hp
D16Z6 - quick, with bolt ons should be able to beat alot of other sport compacts, 125hp
D16y8 - same as D16Z6 but 127hp
DOHC ZC - quick, similar performance to SOHC VTEC but DOHC NON VTEC, aftermarket support not quite as great as SOHC VTEC, 130hp"

D15B 125-130hp!?!? How do I accomplich this? My CRX HF has a JDM D15B in it and I am waiting and saving money for a swap, but this could tide me over for a while until I can afford the swap.

I notice it says "welcome to VTEC" so I have to get a new head, but which one?

Thanks in advance

All I know is, I've got an HF myself, and if you have the factory motor, you got 8 valves buddy, and you don't want to do nothing but kick that motor to the curb, you can't swap the head because the piston's aren't cut out for a 16 valve head. If your short on cash throw in an Si motor. And trust me, you NEED to change the tranny out to at least a DX, if you don't you won't even get outta 2nd gear when you race. And it's still so slow. The person who was going to swap my head for me found all this out then he just threw in his old DX motor for me, and I just got done changing my tranny out last week, omg the difference.

Is your's the stock motor or the JDM D15B there is a big difference. Stock is the non-JDM D15B6 with 8 valves and no Vtec and like 60 to 70 horsepower depending on the year.

Re: Re: D15b - 125-130hp???

If you get a JDM D15B, you get basically a D15 block with the Z6 head on it. The nice thing is that it puts out 130 HP, which is better than the Z6 or DOHC ZC. It says VTEC across the top of the valve cover, so you'd know if you had it. Your stock motor is a D15B, as already said, but with a number designation. The JDM has no number after the B. This is a cool motor, I sold one to a kid and I'm putting it in this week. I know Kris has put this engine in for several people too. I can get one for you for around $550 shipped. Email me if you're interested in getting one. The nice thing is that this motor will rev high with no sweat, like 8K RPM.

I have the JDM D15B not the stock one and it is a 16 valve motor, so how do I get that 125HP (This is temporary, I do plan on putting in a D16Z6 but I don't have money now)

If it is possible to get that horsepower I would like to because I love my car, but hate it's horsepower (or lack of it)

It doesn't have a number after the B in D15B and it is NOT VTEC, so can i put on a VTEC head and make it better

8k RPM, no way, is that after a new head? Because mine redlines at 5k, could it be my ECU alone holding me back?

So how do I achieve that power?

*When i say temporary, I mean like 2-3 months while the new engine is getting fixed up to be swapped in and while I have some down time that I won't need my car

I can get a full engine/transmission combo from a DX for $50 from one of my friends, but I want to try to figure this problem out with the D15B and see if it is possible to get that horse power from this engine first

Re: D15b - 125-130hp???

Travagliante: Yes, shipped. Depending on where you are, it may be $10 more or something, but that's the real deal.

ghstsnpr: Let me rephrase, there was aJDM D15B non VTEC, but the one that offers the 130 hp is VTEC and says so on the valve cover. You could put on a VTEC head, but don't anticipate the same power. The VTEC motor has different compression, stroke ratio, etc. If you want that power out of a 1.5, you'll have to get the JDM D15B VTEC. The DX motor would probably do the exact same as the D15B that you have, if not less. If you have the HF trans, it would be worth it to get the trans, but it's not much of a gain. I'd say to save up your pennies and get an Si trans and D15B VTEC motor. Most people who do the "Mini-me" swap (VTEC head on a D15 motor) have more hassle and problems than it is even worth. Dont' kill yourself over it, just get the real deal.

The JDM D15B VTEC revs high and is made to generate power at high rpms, like I said, the bottom end is a 1.5L displacement, but it's components are all different.

Yeah since he lives just a couple blocks away it would be easier that way, but.... it is an auto tranny and i don't want that, but the engine will give me 30 more HP so I will get that

I want the D16Z6 because it will drop right in no problems (or new mounting brackets)

This was what I thought would be a quick temporary fix until I get the real deal, but if my engine won't get that HP it isn't worth it

Thanks alot man.....

Re: Re: Re: D15b - 125-130hp???

well, first of all, converting over from 5 speed to auto would be enormously difficult and a waste of a good car...

Second, the Z6 motor makes 5 less hp than the D15B, costs more, and is no less difficult to swap into your car than the D15B. If I were to do that swap again right now, I'd prolly go D15B. The Z6's are a great motor, and I love mine, but honestly, what difference could 0.1 liter have on your car? Obviously not much. The D15B doesn't take new mounts, any crazy wiring, or anything, it just goes right in. It's the no brainer in this situation... I only recently discovered this motor, and I'm really in love with it... I just might marry one! lol!

well the D15B SOHC VTEC is an OBD1 engine, so technically, there is wiring issues; either convert to OBD1, or stay OBD0 and hack the distributor (same as d16z6, which d15b and d16z6 both have a p08 head).

The difference in the d16z6 horsepower..125, and D15B horsepower..roughly 127-128hp (130ps which is europe's way of rating horsepower) comes from the d15b's shorter stroke. a short stroke engine can rev higher, and horsepower is a product of torque x rpm. If you want to get technical, the d16z6 has a broader torque curve and pretty much beats on the lil d15b up until about 6800 rpm where the d15b outshines its larger brother...

the D15B is a D15Z1 (VX vtec-e) block with different pistons and a d16z6 head.

Re: D15b - 125-130hp???

I guess you're right, that you do have to choose which OBD, but I wouldn't call it "issues". The whole switchover to OBDZero takes about 5 minutes, and is simpler anyway. I agree that the D16Z6 is slightly better, but that's it, only slightly. If someone wants to save some cashola, they can easily make that 1.5 just as quick as the Z6. I love the fact that Honda was able to engineer such a tiny motor that puts out such a cool power range... I guess I'm just infatuated!

Just be careful. There are three versions of the D15B. Only one of which is the one you really want. There is a D15B, non vtec:

The D15B vtec-e, I cant seem to find a pic, and the D15B vtec, which has one solenoid.
