Reverse?????

i have a 3 speed manual, and when i shift it to reverse the engine shuts off. I haven't tried first, but i've been trying reverse. Does anyone know Y it shuts off???????

Its the "GOAL" safety switch ! It is there to prevent accidently backing over things you shouldnt. GOAL, Get Out And Look....LMAO. Sorry couldnt resist useing that one. Need more info; year, engine type, etc......
