Car Jerks when Put in Reverse and taken out of Reverse

I have a 97 Taurus GL 3.0 SOHV. And when I put it into reverse from park it clunks really hard and the whole engine bogs down like the tranny is in a bind. And when I take it out of reverse it acts like it is coming out of the bind and jerks a little bit. But when I put it into any other gear it is fine and doesn't jerk or slip or anything. The fluid is full. Any ideas?

Re: Car Jerks when Put in Reverse and taken out of Reverse

God bless the mechanical inner workings of the AX4S Tranny......anyways I am not really sure if that is normal for the AX4S Tranny.
But I will tell you this, coming from the mouth of a gear box specialist, if a normal transmission's torque converter was binding; I mean severely binding than I would have looked at. But then again it might just be part of the poor craftsmanship of this tranny and in turn a natural flaw for it to do this. In every Ford ATX I have owned since 1992 I have taken apart and re-fabbed the entire tranny.

Re: Car Jerks when Put in Reverse and taken out of Reverse

I had a chance to take a quick look and when I put it into reverse the whole backend of the engine comes up in the air. So it has to be a motor mount. What things do I need to check after I put the motor mount back in?

The clinking from taking it out of park is becase the whole car is stopped against the parking prawl. Mine does that if I don't set the parking brake before I start - and if you put it in reverse before the engine is all the way warmed up / slowed down, it will do something simiar.

No, it's from the motor mounts not being in. Trust me this is a lot louder and harder jerk than being on a slope and taking it out of park. Thanks for trying to help me out though.

sounds to me like it might be something wrong with the tranny and with the motor mounts. While bad motor mounts would cause the engine to have that much play, something would have to cause the motor to be pushed up. If it were my car i would bring it in to a shop. If i remember right the mounts on the 97 were recalled and you should be able to get them replaced with no charge.
