'96 Elantra Tranny Blown I think?!

I am very much a novice when it comes to cars and how to deturmine what is wrong with them, but I know the tranny is screwed up, I just don't know to what degree could someone give me the symptoms of a blown tranny. BTW my elantra was great up until today, i have never had any major problem that couldn't be fixed quickly, go figure the day i found out I can move into my dream house and I am about to sign a mortgage, I have this kinda crud happen
