please help..97 monte carlo

i have a 97 ls monte carlo. i have a console shift. problem is: I hold the brake down and try to press button in and move the shifter from park. The button on the shifter wont push in. this is an intermittent problem.. i have already done the steps:
1. turn key off
2. apply and hold brake
3. shift to neutral

i cannot press the shift button to put it into neutral even.

If u have any ideas-let me know.. i am at my wits end
