synthetic oil

Which brand of oil do you think is better? Castrol syntec 10w-30 or mobil 1 10w-30? I want to switch to synthetic, and am in search of more opinions on these oils. thanks!

If you want to go with a big name, i would go with Mobil, but if you want REALLY good oil i would throw down for royal purple (kinda hard to find) or Amsoil.

Amsoil has proven to be one of the best synthetics made.

BTW dont throw pure synthetic in your car if it has over 75k on the engine or you will kill your seals and have oil all over your driveway in the morning.

If you do have a higher mileage car i would put valvoline maxlife in it for 2-3 changes and then go with some synthetic blend.... then you can run the good shit without a problem.

Good Luck

good tips, but screw max life. this shit is a hoax, it may have miniscule advantages, but in older cars, oil is oil. It really won't make a difference whether you have max or not. The only thing it does, is take more money outta your pocket, when regular performs just fine. Just as long as you have oil, you're good to go.

Re: synthetic oil

You can change to synthetic directly, there are no danger. A new synthetic oil will not affect the engine diffrent from a new mineral oil in this type of view.

Castrol Syntec aren't really a synthetic oil so Mobil 1 is the best choice. Synthetics can be based on diffrent oils that would give them properties a little diffrent from each other so the performance of the oil depends on what type of performance that is important to you. All oilcompanies does of course say that they are best and have their own figures or figures that prove them right.

i did some research today, and gound out that castrol syntec isnt truly a synthetic oil. It uses a cracked pretrochemical base and is not designed truely from scratch like a full synthetic. This really pisses me off, cuz ive been using the syntec in my car for about 5,000 miles. Its a 90 lesabre, and i switched to synthetic at 133,000 originally going with mobil one. do you think that having the syntec in instead of the mobil one caused addtional wear? I'm pretty fucking pissed at castrol for misleading advertising and am never buying a product from them again. From now on its going to be mobil one. fuck those castrol bastards!!!
