What makes a supercar a supercar???

Is it the 0-60 time or the top speed or maybe the handeling?
maybe its the pricing or all of the above.

here are some I think are tru super cars.

1.Dauer 962 lemans
2.Mclaren LM
3.mercedes clk gtr supersport
4.saleen s7
5.Ferrari 333 SP

yes, its the specs,price, looks, rarity, and the name helps to. i think all lamborghini's are true super cars honestly. almost all ferrari's are. the ones mentioned above are super cars. BMW Z8 i'd say is a supercar more because of rarity, and price. porsches turbo, and gt2 are. gt3 i dont really consider to be, its more of a top end sports car. those are just a few examples. also lol @ MiS0 so true to

But hey thats jus my opinion. supercar = 0-60 time of 3.5 or better 0-100 in 8.5 or better price doesnt matter rareity = 1500 or below. Exoitics are 2nd sportscars/coupes 3rd sports compacts 4th sport sedans/wagons 5th coupes sedan convertibles 6th and MINI VANS LAST!!!!

The main factor of a super car...

1.Light wight
2.The Air resistant are very low
3.the design and concerpt (all knowlage discorver by man kind)
4.Stable & safe in high speed.
5.great down forces
6.very Limited unit for sale....

exotic is something out of the ordinary.
a lotus exige isn't a supercar?
a tuscan s isn't a supercar?
a carrera gt isn't a supercar?

on the other hand,
is an ariel atom a supercar?
is caterham superlight R500 a supercar?
a noble m12 gto isn't but a m400 is?

what you have listed are more or less race cars (which can also be supercars i guess)....
in my opinion, you have a skewed view of how to class cars (also i would say rather 'pointless')
following your rationale, a stock car with a hyped up engine can be classed as a supercar cos it is
i) 0-60 in sub 3.whatever.
ii) super rare (cos it'll be the only exact example of it in the world)

i think a supercar is one that sets out to do something 'more' than the thing that came before.

numbers do not figure into the whole supercar equation because that is dependent on the time period from which the car comes from,
not to mention that the 0-60 is dependent on the gear ratios.....
by looking at pure numbers you are totally ignoring the achievements of things that have past.

i think a supercar is one that changes your idea of what a car is or what a car can do.

i think the humble nsx is a supercar because it showed the whole world that you can build a car almost entirely out of aluminium and what a difference a good set up can make.

the modern V8 ferraris and 911s are supercars because they have an almost race spec engine, using all of the latest technology in both construction and materials and techniques.

i guess you can say that what makes a supercar is it's focus.
the supercar has an aim to be fast that is true
but
i think more importantly, it is one that doesn't care about the real world and just does what it sets out to do.
but then even, why can't super fast cars be super comfortable too?

there is no definition of a supercar.
it is super if you think it is.

i have a passion for cerberas and tuscans and most of all ferrari 365 boxers.
none of them can do a 0-60 in less than 4 secs.
none of them are particulary rare (except the 25-30 year old ferrari...)
and they don't cost much.
but they are supercars.

a exotic car is pretty much a limited production car!!!!! yes a super car would be exotic but not all exotics are supercars!!!!!!

Let me see....if what I read a super car is a car that can do something most other cars can't. that would place the VW bug in the super car class. It can go thousand's of miles without any water.
What is Superman? He's a human that can perform feats beyond the normal human ability's. It has nothing to do with color, race or religion.
I'd say a super car is a car that can perform feats beyond a normal car. It has nothing to do with price, the number made or it's features.
An exotic can be a super car, a VW with a 454 blown big block can be a super car, a GP cart can be one also.
But a HiPerformance car is just that, a hiperformance car. A sports car is just that, a sports car.
Now there's lot's of Pro Stock cars. Guess what? There just a Pro Stock car, but the #1 car, the winner, numbro uno, now that's a super car.
Like Superman, in each class of cars there can only be one supercar.
