1990 - hard start and overheat

My 1990 cherokee (182,000mi and counting) has been having a hard time starting...it's got a new battery and starter...i heard it might be the fuel pump so i'm letting that prime by turning the ignition to on for a while before i try to start her up...i was wondering if anyone had a definite fix for this problem...
and to add to my issues, she went and overheated on me today...after a standard 15 min drive i parked her and she overheated...no clue why...the cap on the coolant resevoir was a bit loose, but i don't know if that could have been from all the boiling going on inside...
i know NOTHING about automobiles (i can't even find the bloody radiator cap) so any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Clean your throttle body and IAC with some carb cleaner. this will most likely fix your hard start prob for a while. Get a new PCV valve to fix it for ~30k miles. As for your overheating prob, just search around. There are too many possible causes of that so just do some research and diagnosis work.

thanks much for the advice...but could you humor my ignorance and tell me what an IAC and PCV valve are?

Positive Crankcase Ventelation/Valve(Located at the front of the valve cover) and Idle Air Control(Located on the throttle body).
