96 Grand Am Stalls when hot
Okay everyone, I get my starting problems fixed (turns out it was the coil housing assembly gone bad), but now I got a new problem coming up. The car starts up fine, and it runs smoothly enough from what i can tell, but when the engine gets warm and running at normal temp, the car wants to stall, either when its idleing or during a quick acceleration. Both times it doesn't really plutter or anything like that, it just dies out like someone turned off the key. No check engine light is on, but it runs great as long as the engine is cold. Also after the engine has gotten warm and it stalls it will restart okay, but after a couple times it will no longer even start. Any ideas?

![]() Here's what I got so far, it could be a possible two things, the fuel pump itself (or the screen that captures dirt and particles inside the fuel tank) that needs to be changed -OR- The catalytic converter. I never thought of this but apparently if its clogged up or not working right it'll choke out the car just like a faulty fuel pump (never thought of it like that). Problem is, I'm tired of guessing...i've put so much work (and money!!) into the car, that before i put another dime, i want to be for certain that this is whats wrong and fixing this will get it running to specs. |

I think there is a way where you can check the converter...something about checking both ends of the converter, temperature wise...if they're close together, then its okay, but if the back temperature is way off from the front than it needs to be replaced.

Re: 96 Grand Am Stalls when hot
you have to remove the engine cover and take out the coolant pack. Some silly bastard designed the engine for looks, not for making it easy on everyone. Anyway, the coolant pack is located right in the engine block and when it gets too hot outside, it stalls. remove the pack and wait about 15-20 min...if you don't have that long, pack it in some ice or something cold and it should start.

Do you mean coil pack??? I would also check to see if the vehicle is going into closed loop. You're going to need the OBD2 scan tool to do this... |
