rear brake issues

We've got a 98 Cav that is having some problems. Just wondered if anyone could give some insight on what the prob might be or if it's happened to anyone else?
We were driving down the road at about 10-15 mph, hit the brakes lightly to make a turn and heard two loud clunks. At first it sounded like we had hit something and the tires were going flat. But then my husband hit the brakes again and it happened again. The ABS light isn't on on the console or anything. But everytime you hit the brakes it makes a terrible loud clunking noise. It's only the rear brakes and I think it's only the right rear. We just had new shoes, roater (spelling?) and the whole works done about 2 months ago. It's been fine up until right now.

Your calipers, could be shot. It happened on my '92 Cav. Sometimes, it would also seem like the brakes were locking up. The caliper on the right passenger side, was shot, and I was losing break fluid. Your brake light will probably come on soon. Get the calipers checked. It doesn't take much to change them either, but you should get them looked at, and soon.

Unless you have done a break conversion the rear breaks on a cav don't have calipers they have pistions that drive the shoes out twards the drum that apply the break.
From what you have told us. I would suggest that you take the car back to the place you had the work done and have them REadjust the back breaks. Sounds like they have them ajusted too tight. If they are adjusted too tight they will pop as you put it because they are not sliding against the drum like they are soposed too they are grabbing too soon I would also check your emer. break cable as well, it can sometimes stick the shoes in one place even after you disengage the break inside the drum and when you start to move the shoes don't retract and when you apply the break they pop lose. My wifes 2000 cav does it now and again when the car has sat for a while and that car only has 20,000 on it and has the original breaks on it.

When you hit the brakes does the rear wheels seem like they lock and the rear end squat? I've seen many times where people do the rear shoes and never lubricate the Brake shoe tables (thats where the shoe contacts the backing plate) If you had it done at a garage I'd take it back.

if they do lock up like buster said do that and take a file and remove the edges of the brake shoes. mine use to lock up every so often. when i removed the edge around the shoes it stopped. i asked my teacher about it at school and he said he's heard that alot about chevy's back brakes doing that
